Is it possible to search within these forums?
As a noob I would like to be able to check whether an idea has already been discussed before starting a new thread.

Also is it possible to follow a forum or thread by RSS or email notification.

These are standard features of most forum systems but I cant find them here.

1) Regrettably, there is no search from the actual site, however Bing and Google can both search them, provided you aim them correctly.

2) You are not alone in asking for this.

More on all of that here:

Why oh why have they reinvented (badly) the Forum wheel!
There are any number of ready to use forum software packages with all the features built in. If they don't want to go outside Microsoft then their colleagues in research have forums for ICE etc.

I don't want the PhotoSynth development team spending their time working on forum features when they should be doing what they are uniquely qualified to do - creating world class image processing software.

The closest thing I've got to an answer about not using an off the shelf messageboard solution comes from Bert Molinari ( http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=bert ) here:

RSS feeds have been added for the four tabs of profile pages, though, so perhaps it is most productive to make this particular thread a specific request for RSS feeds for discussions in the forums.

A discussion related to email notification and forum subscriptions is here: http://photosynth.net/discussion.aspx?cat=01b6f15f-42eb-49cb-a221-ed56615e1c47&dis=632404f6-f814-499d-a842-4937e5f1287d

As far as search, I'm perfectly content to use web search engines, even if it isn't quite as convenient as having a search box here on the page. Here's a sample query that might have helped you: http://bit.ly/synthforumsearch
