What if people could volunteer their computers processing power to combine synths in the same area to make one big synth. All the synths could be processed and overlapped with the worlds computing power.
The Photosynth team has, indeed, said many times that they intend to link synths together and so far all of the processing happens on our own computers, so that does seem to suggest you are on the right track.
When you consider that David Gedye is the Photosynth Group Program Manager and he previously worked on SETI@Home (another distributed computing program), I'd say the chances are quite good that your guess is right on the money.
I might point out that the Scene Reconstruction stage of Photosynth is currently architected to run on a single core, if I am not mistaken, and that it is this that is one of the big problems to solve as far as enabling multiple people to work on the same synth.
