Topic: Picture tagging

I know you can tag a synth, but there should be a way to tag individual pictures with text that fades in (or so) when the image is the focus or when you zoom in enough.

It isn't quite as detailed as what you're wanting, Brad, but you could try using Photosynth's highlight system.

You can draw a square around any part of any photo or any panorama and give it a short title and a bit of a caption.

To add some highlights to one of your synths or panoramas, simply:
> sign into your account
>> load one of your synths or panos
>>> click the [ Edit this Photosynth ] button
>>>> Select the [Highlights] tab in the editor's right hand panel
>>>>> Navigate to the image you want to add a highlight to
>>>>>> Click [New Highlight] and frame what you want to be shown when someone clicks the highlight's thumbnail
>>>>>>> Add a title and description for the highlights and reorder them as you please
>>>>>>>> Be sure to click [Save] in the lower right corner when you're finished

The drawback is only that currently all of the highlights for the entire synth will be shown in one extremely tall column on the right side of your synth, so if you add multiple highlights per photo to a lot of photos, it may be difficult to find the highlight that you're looking for. I guess since they are called highlights, rather than tags, they are meant to be used sparingly.

It would be a bit nicer if when you were close to a photo, only the highlights for that photo would display, or they would simply appear when you hover your mouse above them, but the Photosynth viewer isn't quite there yet. Give it some time, though and I think we'll see the highlights grow into more of what you're after.

In the mean time, give highlights a shot and let the rest of us know what you think or what you'd like to see added or changed.

Cheers, mate, and congrats on getting married. =]

Is there an API to add highlights??
Nathanael.Lawrence (Over 1 year ago)
@dt008, I don't know where to find it if so. Presumably the Photosynth editor app is using what you want.

Here are the only two bits I know of for interacting with the Photosynth site:

Photosynth Web Service: http://photosynth.net/photosynthws/PhotosynthService.asmx
This is what the synther talks to when calculating and uploading synths and panos. Christoph Hausner and Kean Walmsley have used it in their point cloud exporters.

Photosynth Javascript API Documentation: http://photosynth.net/api/docs/default.html
This is for what you were asking for in the lounge, I believe.

For more information on building your own apps with Photosynth, I recommend talking to the licensing team ( http://photosynth.net/commercial.aspx ) or just emailing the Photosynth team at photosynth@live.com or one of the team members' personal email addresses. I am using highlights to provide easy navigation to highlights in a Synth. I am happy with that as it is for now.
However, I feel Brad has a point that it is a good improvement to have functionality for specific comment on a specific photo in a Synth while the photo shows in a Synth.

@OmniSynThesis, I was thinking mainly that Brad was meaning tagging his own photos in his own synths, but I definitely agree about how compelling it would be and how much more it would add to be able to comment on other people's synths on a per-picture or per-part of picture detail level.

Flickr is great for the very reason that people will leave notes about very specific parts of your photos and you can see this when you hover over the right portion of the image. I would love to see this come to Photosynth as well, especially being that the functionality has been there since 2008 August 20 for people to link to very specific viewpoints inside a synth.

I've always imagined the viewer zooming in to a great little easter egg in a photo as I read the comment about it.
