Some programs read the metadata in an inage file that tells the orientation of the camera and rotate the image when needed. Does photosyth autorotate, or do I need to rotate the images before I start a synth?

It's correct procedure to rotate your images to all be right side up before synthing. 

Photosynth will try to discover which direction is 'up' by assuming that the majority of photos that synth together are right-side up and pulling others that match them into line but it's not always successful. 

Also, sometimes a photo that is uploaded right side up can be twisted off balance by surrounding images. In this case, you can use the [y] key to toggle between 'photo up' and 'world up'.
