I just tried to create my first synth (using 66 pictures shot in a relatively small room) and the finished product displays rectangles over the picture and the pictures fills in as i move it into view. I've looked at the examples and they are seamless - no overlaid rectangles and easy to move around the image - it's always there. Why is this and what am I doing wrong?

I see - you have to run it through ICE first - sorry

Pemberton, just to clarify - panoramas aren't Photosynths and Photosynths aren't panoramas. They are both excellent in their own ways, but really are suited to different purposes.

As beautiful as a panorama is and as easy as it is to navigate around it, they have been around for years. ICE makes creating them very easy and photosynth.net provides a great free way to host them as well as a really smooth viewer, but photosynths are actually doing something a bit more interesting and new.

To make a truly great panorama, the lens of your camera really oughtn't move through space, because that would give it a different perspective on foreground objects vs. background objects that would result in panorama stitching errors.

By contrast, to shoot a photosynth, you really need to move all around things so that the computer can track how different parts of the scene relate to each other as the camera moves through, around, or past them.

Photosynth gives you the freedom to really move through an environment and start to map it out spatially, whereas panoramas are really only a little ring or bubble of photography that doesn't let you move around the space at all.

Don't get me wrong; panoramas can be beautiful, and hopefully in the not too distant future can begin linking to each other (I don't know when that will happen, though), but for now Photosynths are far better suited to creating a 3D model of an object or a space and moving freely from one vantage point to another as you wish.
