Topic: How to make 360 view of object

I'm trying to create a smooth 360 degree view AROUND an object. I have a very simple object but after several tries, I usually get a few adjacent views but never more than a few and something between 25 and 50% synthy. I would hope to be able to walk all the way around the object (or alternatively, have the object rotate in front of me).

FYI, the object (link below) is already 100% synthetic, since it was created with Povray.  I kept the camera in place and rotated the object about the origin.  This seems to be consistent with the "how to synth" manual I read tonight.

Can you explain to me why the background is coloured as it is? Is this simply an artistic choice by yourself?

When synthing an object that rotates in front of the camera, instead of the camera rotating around the object it is important for the background to not be trackable by the synther.

Your synthetic object is going to give the synther problems to begin with because each pair of sides appears to have an identical texture. (i.e. Sides 1 and 3 are identical; Sides 2 and 4 are identical). I think that you would have better luck if every surface has a completely unique texture, not shared by any other face of the object.

If you can find something natural to photograph such as fabric with very visible texture, a tree trunk, a richly patterned carpet, a rusty car, a dirty wall, or beach umbrellas like the ones in this synth of yours ( http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=4193916c-cddf-4831-8ac1-437aa39965e6 ) and circle them with your camera, you should immediately see better results in terms of the 3D reconstruction, provided that you take small enough steps around them.

Your computer generated object above has plenty of views all the way around it, but the repeated patterns in the visual texture and the stationary background aren't helping the synther understand what's going on.
