It lies on the Atlantic Ocean coast, close to the town of St. George&#39;s and to the historic Fort St. Catherine. One of Bermuda&#39;s national parks, it is a popular public beach. Snorkelling is a popular activity, as the bay has impressive underwater coral reefs, which explains its popularity with those who snorkel.&#10;&#10;The bay has an interesting history and was intimately connected with Bermuda&#39;s &#34;Gunpowder Plot&#34;. On August 14, 1775, a group of Bermudians sympathetic to the independentist cause of the American Continental Congress stole gunpowder from the British Magazine in St. George&#39;s, rolled it across the island to Tobacco Bay and shipped it to America."<div class="commentBlock font12">

The Latin name for the offender, communis rixatrix, appears in the feminine gender, and makes it clear that only women could commit this crime.&#10;&#10;The offense, which was exported to North America with the colonists, was punishable by dunking&#58; being placed in a chair and submerged in a river or pond. Although rarely prosecuted, it was officially abolished in England and Wales in 1967. The 1967 Act also finally abolished the other rarely prosecuted offenses of champerty, challenging to fight, eavesdropping, being a common barrator and of being a common night walker. Since it applies only to women, it is invalid in the United States as it runs contrary to the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution.&#34;"<div class="commentBlock font12">

The first structure was started in 1844, completed in 1883, and then destroyed by an arsonist in 1884. The present-day Cathedral was designed by William Hay, its foundation stone laid on May 1, 1886, and the first phase completed in 1894. The church was commissioned as the Bermuda Cathedral that year, finally completed in 1905, and consecrated in 1911.&#10;&#10;The plan of the church is a Roman Cross, and although the architecture is Neo-Gothic as opposed to bermudian, most of it is built of bermuda limestone from the Par-La-Ville quarry. However, the stone around the windows, doors, and the rings of the arches, cornices and gables, is Caen stone from Normandy, France."<div class="commentBlock font12">
