by Luzern "Maenliturm Der Turm hat seine Gestalt, abgesehen vom 1934 erfolgten Ersatz des Pultdaches durch eine armierte Betondecke, seit dem 15. Jahrhundert nicht verändert. Quereckig (8,8 m x 6,65 m) steht er vor der Mauer und misst mit den Aufbauten 33 Meter in der Höhe. Er ist von einem Zinnenkranz über Rundbogenfries mit dreimal vorkragenden Konsolen bekrönt. Seitlich erheben sich über den Turm hinaus zwei runde Erkertürmchen: das sechseckige, mit Ziegeln gedeckte Pyramidendach des östlichen endet mit Knauf und Fähnchen, dasjenige des westlichen mit der Halbfigur eines zwei Meter hohen geharnischten Kriegers mit Fähnchen und Schwert. Diese aus Eisenblech bestehende Gestalt, welche dem Turm den Namen gab und ihn folglich schon in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts zierte, findet sich schon auf Schillings Bildern in dieser Form. Das Bruchsteinmauerwerk des Turmes ist roh verputzt, die Ecken besitzen verschieden tiefe, niedrige Quadern. Das Innere ist in vier Geschosse eingeteilt. Das unterste öffnet sich in Richtung Stadt und zeigt in hohem Stichbogen gegen aussen rechteckige Schiessscharten, die zum Bestreichen des Mauerfusses eingerichtet waren."

The reaon for the weird shape of this panorama is the way the panorama was taken: resting against the protruding rail of the "5 Fingers" catwalk on the Krippenstein: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=334c1ad4-779b-473c-a71f-2e76ec5f0c6a - a very uncomfortable position. This - and the strong wind - accounts for some blurry regions in the panorama. I planned to shoot a better image later but didn't find the time for it till today..."

by mattu "This 10Gigapixel image is a merge of 659 22Mpixel images shot with Canon 1ds MarkIII. We modified a Meade telescope mount to automatically rotate the camera. We were parked at the corner of the glacier point balcony for about 90 minutes to capture this. The stitching was done via Microsoft ICE and took about 2 hours on an 8 core machine.
