DEEP at OCCCA

by AnimAlu "Deep is an exhibition by artists who persist in trying to express the intangible, creating work for which no simple explanation suffices. With existential landscapes, angst-filled portraits, feverish abstractions, arcane conceptual constructions, philosophical photographs, seductive ceramics and sculptures, self-reflexive videos, heady performances, esoteric installations, and internet-based New Media explorations, the artists in Deep are fearless in the face of the infinite, unafraid of introspection. And sometimes Deep is funny! Deep is a riddle, an enigma, a plunge into the unknown. Juror’s Statement It was a great pleasure to serve as this year’s juror for OCCCA’s DEEP exhibition. With over 800 submissions, I had the opportunity and challenge to review a diverse amount of works. Because of the wealth of submissions, I enjoyed seeing a variety of artistic practices which led me to focus my selections toward a more contemporary viewpoint. Organizations like OCCCA are deeply important to the local community as well as to the community of artists it acknowledges. I would like to congratulate the artists recognized in this exhibition as well as to thank all the artists that have taken the time to submit their works this year. The occasion to be a juror for OCCCA has been a wonderful opportunity and I am grateful to have been selected. Grace Kook-Anderson Curator of Exhibitions, Laguna Art Museum Grace Kook-Anderson received her B.A. in Art History (2000) and Art Practice (2001) from the University of California, Berkeley, and received her M.A. in Curatorial Practice (2007) from the California College of the Arts, San Francisco. She is a co-founder of InSitu, a curatorial collaborative (2007-present). Her curatorial projects focus on contemporary art with an emphasis on the investigation of place and social change. At Laguna Art Museum, Kook-Anderson has curated WoW: Emergent Media Phenomenon; OsCene 2010; Jeremy Fish: Weathering the Storm; Sean Duffy: Searcher; and is the coordinating curator for Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California, 1964-1971 in conjunction with the Pacific Standard Time initiative."

by GigaView "The Blue Monster Wall http://www.dbulls.com/stadium/athletic_park.html The Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP) was designed by HOK Sport + Venue + Event, architects of Camden Yards in Baltimore, Jacobs Field in Cleveland, Coors Field in Colorado along with many other new stadiums opened in the past 10 years. The $16-million brick ballpark opened in 1995 and was expanded to a 10,000-seat capacity for the 1998 season, the year the Bulls began playing in the Triple-A International League. A roof covers approximately 2,500 seats behind home plate and down both the first and third base lines to the end of each dugout. All seats at the DBAP are extra wide with seat backs, extra leg room and over 95 percent of the seats have cup holders. The stadium was designed and built so that every seat gives fans a great view of the field with an intimate ballpark feel. Durham Bulls Athletic Park is located in downtown Durham and can be accessed from the Durham Freeway. The ballpark reflects many characteristics of old-time parks and the historic downtown Durham architecture. A 32-foot-high wall stands in left field 305 feet from home plate, resembling Fenway Park’s Green Monster. The Blue Monster, as it’s called in Durham, contains a similar old-style manual scoreboard. The ballpark’s most distinctive feature is the Bull that stands tall above the Blue Monster. This Bull was modeled after the bull used in the 1988 film, Bull Durham. The actual Bull from the the movie is hung in the concourse level of the DBAP. Construction of a “warehouse type” building, Diamond View, began in 1997 and was completed during the 1998 season. The Diamond View building is located behind the right field seating sections and uses the same architecture as the DBAP, including the green roof, brickwork and windows. In 2002, the DBAP unveiled a new playground area in the left field section of the concourse. This new area is sure to provide fun for Bulls fans for many years to come. Also new for 2002, the DBAP unveiled a new set of signs throughout the ballpark. Every sign, including restroom, smoking, and seating locators, were replaced. The new signs are a part of the season long celebration commemorating the Bulls’ 100th Anniversary. In the Fall of 2003, the field of the DBAP received a major face lift. After nine years of service, the top layers of grass and soil were removed and replaced with brand new top soil and Tissport™ Bermuda grass. The renovation took place over several weeks and cost over $100,000."
