The site is situated north of Sisian and is one of Armenia’s most important prehistoric sites going back millennia into the bronze age and possibly earlier. Being touted as Armenia’s ‘Stonehenge’ (on the site notice boards) is doing this wonderful monument(s) an injustice, because for me it was infinitely more interesting. Why the megaliths are here isn’t known, but many of the 200+ stones have holes through which have led to many theories. Whatever the reason for its existence, the standing stones, setting, size and the many tombs make this a fascinating and wonderful place to visit."

<a10:updated>2010-09-03T05:53:25Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/cc4109f4-fa2d-4846-93cd-f33a4531bc26" />

<a10:author><a10:name>PGRic</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=PGRic</a10:uri></a10:author>
Victoria Cave, Nr Settle

<img src="http://cdn2.ps1.photosynth.net/pano/c01001200-ALUKeCV8eyM/thumb.jpg" alt="Victoria Cave, Nr Settle" title"Victoria Cave, Nr Settle" /> by PGRic "This is the view from Victoria Cave near Settle, North Yorkshire, England. The cave was ‘found’ to the modern era in 1837, with its discovery quickly leading to a series of excavations by Victorian ‘antiquarians’. These excavations pointed to a different and warmer climate some 130000 years ago with bones belonging to rhinos, elephants, hippos and hyenas being found, presumably with the latter animal dragging the other bones in. An ice age set in and glaciers are believed to have covered the area from 120,000 years ago to around 10,000BC. Victoria Cave also has the distinction of being the earliest site for human habitation in the Yorkshire Dales with an 11,000 year old antler harpoon point found among a pile of reindeer bones. Roman / Romano British folks also made it here too, with various finds including brooches and coins."

<a10:updated>2010-04-23T05:00:05Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/5e8952e6-480f-4469-bfc9-4209dc1deb8d" />

<a10:author><a10:name>Marouska</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=Marouska</a10:uri></a10:author>
Hagar Qim

<img src="http://cdn4.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001400-AG8NjtoVgiM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="Hagar Qim" title"Hagar Qim" /> by Marouska "Hagar Qim is a prehistoric temple found in Malta in the village of Zurrieq"

<a10:updated>2010-01-19T06:03:29Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/90f8fe3e-2002-4523-a1a9-564d06a3cdfd" />

<a10:author><a10:name>sir_ivar</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=sir_ivar</a10:uri></a10:author>
Tinaja Blanca Petroglyph Site

<img src="http://cdn4.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001400-AOgJwCHPeiM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="Tinaja Blanca Petroglyph Site" title"Tinaja Blanca Petroglyph Site" /> by sir_ivar "Trying to create a high resolution point cloud of this newly discovered archaeological site."

<a10:updated>2009-12-23T22:29:08Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/320a6bda-90da-4bd6-865c-3be03729e4fa" />

<a10:author><a10:name>PGRic</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=PGRic</a10:uri></a10:author>
Skyreholme Rock Art

<img src="http://cdn3.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001300-ABMTwfxvlCM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="Skyreholme Rock Art" title"Skyreholme Rock Art" /> by PGRic "This stone, carved in the 'cup and ring' tradition can be found on High Green, to the NE of Skyreholme and Appletreewick, North Yorkshire, England.

Most archaeologists believe that such carvings were created approx 6000-3500 years ago, in the period spanning the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age. The rock art is found on a limestone cliff face adjacent to Meyers Spring, one of the only stable sources of fresh water for many miles. The oldest art found at the site consists of the prehistoric Pecos River Style (2000 to 4000 years old). Most it has faded or has been covered by early historic (150 to 400 years old) pictographs that now dominate the site. The latest pictographs found are some the best preserved in North America and appear to chronicle the earliest contact between European and the native peoples of this area.

Several native groups are known to have visited the area and include Apache, Arapahoe, Comanche, Kiowa, Kiowa Apache, Pawnee, Ute, and an earlier group we call Lower Pecos people. An United State military outpost named Fort Meyers(or Myers) was established near the spring to try and control the native peoples in the late 1800s. The fort and spring were named after one of the black Seminole soldiers who served under Lt. John L. Bullis.

Most of the interpretations of the rock art listed in the highlights are those of Reeda Peel, a rock art specialist at the Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State University in Alpine Texas. As with any artwork, a lot of what it "means" is speculation.

Unless otherwise noted, the photos were taken on September 5, 2009 by Mark D. Willis. I have added some historic photographs for reference. Those are listed at the end of the highlights.

Anyone wishing to visit the site can contact the non-profit Rock Art Foundation ( http://www.rockart.org ) about one of their twice a year tours."

<a10:updated>2009-09-09T07:34:44Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/caf34d08-6d30-4fbf-8ad8-e9588c5ee8c4" />

<a10:author><a10:name>kration</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=kration</a10:uri></a10:author>
St Cuthberts Cave

<img src="http://cdn2.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001200-AEwTjez_liM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="St Cuthberts Cave" title"St Cuthberts Cave" /> by kration "St Cuthbert's Cave is named after Saint Cuthbert (634-687), who travelled from Lindisfarne to Durham, and rested in this cave on the way. Cuthbert was bishop of Lindisfarne. He converted Lindisfarne to Roman Christianity from Celtic Christianity. I'm not sure if that's in his favour or not!

The cave is approched from a wooded path, which branches off into a ferned glade leading to the cave. It is a very special place, very peaceful. The rock of the cave is soft, and there are a lot of carvings - nothing prehistoric that I could see, but a lot of interesting 'graffiti' over the last few centuries. This includes carvings from the family that owns the land, though I would not class this as 'graffiti' - it is much more thoughtful than that. See if you can find the tributes they have carved .

In this synth I've tried to show how the cave appears to you as you approach it from the path. I am amazed about how well the synth program has replicated my photos. Although there is one bit where it gets it badly wrong!

You approach the cave along the path, explore the cave, leave via the ferned glade and are met by the vista of the Cheviots. But, the best bit is zooming in on the graffiti and testaments, or exploring the cave, or seeing the little pillar of rock that supports the caves overhang, or seeing my bike, or the Cheviot landscape - I can't make my mind up."

<a10:updated>2009-08-07T13:40:33Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/b927d26a-a276-40b7-8c0d-cbdabca150bf" />

<a10:author><a10:name>trowlmaster</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=trowlmaster</a10:uri></a10:author>
Beccles

<img src="http://cdn3.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001300-AEQS+MFajyM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="Beccles" title"Beccles" /> by trowlmaster

<a10:updated>2009-07-22T04:20:52Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/33ad796b-405e-47a8-b97a-91936a75ebb3" />
