So it seemed only fitting to honor the greatest biologist of all time, Charles Darwin, with an exhibition of rare books and images from Bancroft and other UC libraries. These are complemented by a selection of artifacts and natural history specimens from the Museum of Paleontology, the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, the University and Jepson Herbaria, the Essig Museum of Entomology, and the Hearst Museum of Anthropology.

The occasion for honoring Darwin, of course, is the 200th anniversary of his birth on February 12, 1809, and the 150th anniversary of his great work, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, published on November 24, 1859, in London by John Murray. But this exhibition is not just about the Origin. It also encompasses the books that influenced Darwin in developing his great ideas, including the narratives of great explorers, the natural histories of Britain and elsewhere, and the treatises on geology and classification. It also celebrates the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle not only with published accounts from the voyage, but with specimens of plants, animals, and fossils just like those that Darwin collected--topped off with a scale-model of the vessel herself."

<a10:updated>2009-12-25T08:30:20Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/bad4cfbd-02c4-473d-9bea-d46b91457571" />

<a10:author><a10:name>mononabob</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=mononabob</a10:uri></a10:author>
Ballyroon Mountains, Sheepshead Peninsula, West Cork, Ireland

<img src="http://cdn1.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001100-AEEK87IMeyM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="Ballyroon Mountains, Sheepshead Peninsula, West Cork, Ireland" title"Ballyroon Mountains, Sheepshead Peninsula, West Cork, Ireland" /> by mononabob "This spot is the highest point in the Ballyroon Mountains near the end of the Sheepshead Peninsula in West Cork, Ireland. At the time there was a 15 m.p.h. speed limit on the railway. The magnificent 12 arch bridge, which dominates the estuary of Ballydehob, was the major engineering achievement of the line. Mounting losses, coal shortages and the arrival of buses and motor cars eventually brought the closure of the line. The final train ran on 27 January 1947 and the station finally closed altogether on 1 June 1953. Ballydehob was the main intermediate station on the railway."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballydehob#Railway"

<a10:updated>2009-12-21T08:04:33Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/f5a1b1f4-f63a-41e1-a9cc-5530e20899e2" />

<a10:author><a10:name>Tehran24.com</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=Tehran24.com</a10:uri></a10:author>
Azadi Tower

<img src="http://cdn4.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001400-AKsNKUtngiM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="Azadi Tower" title"Azadi Tower" /> by Tehran24.com "Azadi tower is situated in the middle of Azadi Square (میدانِ آزادی in Persian ), (translation: "Azadi (Freedom) Square") a very famous square in Tehran, capital of Iran."

<a10:updated>2008-10-01T12:29:39Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/9c8553f0-913d-4e06-933f-5be28ccdcf23" />

<a10:author><a10:name>TonyErnst</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=TonyErnst</a10:uri></a10:author>
300,000 Penguins, South Georgia Island

<img src="http://cdn1.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001100-AD8SL9PljCM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="300,000 Penguins, South Georgia Island" title"300,000 Penguins, South Georgia Island" /> by TonyErnst "The King Penguin colony on the Salisbury Plain of South Georgia Island.
