There is a Martello located at Ferry Reach in St George's Parish. It was completed in the 1820s. Martello towers (or simply Martellos) are small defensive forts built in several countries of the British Empire during the 19th century, from the time of the Napoleonic Wars onwards. They stand up to 40 feet (12m) high (with two floors) and typically had a garrison of one officer and 15-25 men. Their round structure and thick walls of solid masonry made them resistant to cannon fire, while their height made them an ideal platform for a single heavy artillery piece, mounted on the flat roof and able to traverse a 360° arc. A few Martello towers were surrounded by a moat for extra defence. They were used throughout the 19th century, but became obsolete with the introduction of powerful rifled artillery. Many have survived to the present day, often preserved as historic monuments."

Charles Babbage's DE No. 2 at the Computer History Museum

by Joseph_Joy "This is a Gigapixel image of the Difference Engine No. 2 (DE2) located at the Computer History Museum, Mountain View (www.computerhistory.org). Charles Babbage designed the DE2 but it was never built in his lifetime. Over 100 years later a team at the London Science Museum led by Doron Swade built the first DE2. This particular machine, owned by Narhan Myhrvold, is one of the 2 in existence, the other being at the London Science Museum. The image was stitched from 132 individual photographs using Microsoft Research’s Image Composite Editor. The photographs were taken on August 26th, 2010 by Joseph M. Joy as part of an ongoing collaboration between the Computer History Museum and Microsoft Research. Please contact the museum for more information."

Thanks for all the comments! Douglas: we are actually working on integrating panoramas, video, deep zoom, and other visualization technologies on a more comprehensive "exhibit" on the DE2, like the narratives in http://www.digitalnarratives.net. No ETA for that at this time - it's work in progress.

For what it's worth, Ed, I'm glad you went with the full resolution photos on this one. When Photosynth introduces dense reconstruction this synth will shine all the more.

If you know someone who has a computer with obscene amounts of RAM, you should try the original photos in Yasutaka Furukawa's PMVS2 by using Henri Astre's PhotosynthToolkit. If you don't have the originals anymore, you can download original resolution copies of the photos with Henri's PhotosynthTileDownloader.
