by The.Rev "Ashford Castle is a medieval castle near Cong in County Mayo, Ireland on the shore of Lough Corrib. The castle was built in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family following their defeat of the O'Connors, the Royal House of Connacht. In 1868, the estate passed to Lord Ardilaun, an avid gardener who oversaw the development of massive woodlands and rebuilt the entire west wing of the castle. The Castle passed to Ardilaun's nephew Ernest Guinness, who sold it to Noel Huggard in 1939. He opened the estate as a hotel, which became renowned for the provision of its country pursuits, such as angling and shooting."

The Liberty Tree

by The.Rev "A commemorative sculpture, entitled "The Liberty Tree" was commissioned by Carlow Local Aurthorities to mark the Bicentenary of the 1798. The macabre imagery is a deliberate statement of thought provocation; the stem of the tree is made up of clambering skeletons. It commemorates the 1798 Rising of the United Irishmen. There were several hundred rebels slain in Carlow town and their remains are buried in the 'Croppies Grave', in nearby Graiguecullen."

So it seemed only fitting to honor the greatest biologist of all time, Charles Darwin, with an exhibition of rare books and images from Bancroft and other UC libraries. These are complemented by a selection of artifacts and natural history specimens from the Museum of Paleontology, the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, the University and Jepson Herbaria, the Essig Museum of Entomology, and the Hearst Museum of Anthropology. The occasion for honoring Darwin, of course, is the 200th anniversary of his birth on February 12, 1809, and the 150th anniversary of his great work, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, published on November 24, 1859, in London by John Murray. But this exhibition is not just about the Origin. It also encompasses the books that influenced Darwin in developing his great ideas, including the narratives of great explorers, the natural histories of Britain and elsewhere, and the treatises on geology and classification. It also celebrates the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle not only with published accounts from the voyage, but with specimens of plants, animals, and fossils just like those that Darwin collected--topped off with a scale-model of the vessel herself."

Wish more museums would allow this, most don't even allow photography :-(

UCC Quad Synth

by wj.morton "Situated at the heart of the main campus, ‘The Quad’ is surrounded by a group of imposing limestone buildings constructed between 1847 and 1849, when UCC was first founded. Designed by the gifted architectural partnership of Thomas Deane and Benjamin Woodward, the buildings follow the College style of the 1840s. This style has variously been described as Perpendicular Gothic, Tudor Gothic or Victorian Gothic. Mr James Mangan, the well-known Cork jeweller and clockmaker, installed the tower clock in 1851. When UCC first opened, the buildings were the hub of academic life. Today the West Wing still has several lecture theatres, but is also home to many of the administrative offices responsible for the day-to-day running of the University. The North Wing houses UCC's unique collection of Ogham Stones, the Aula Maxima (Great Hall), and the Visitors' Centre, a centre which caters for the many visitors to the College. The East Wing, originally built as the private residence of the first President, Sir Robert Kane, continues to be the location of the President's and Vice Presidents' Offices. You two should consider filling in the 'Author' metadata in your photos before synthing. It becomes increasingly important in collaborative synths or (in the future) linked synths.
