It was built by Despot &#272;ura&#273; Brankovi&#263; in the first half of the 15th century, during the era of the Serbian Despotate. Later that century it was further fortified by the Turks. The fortress withstood several sieges by Turks and Serbs, which it survived relatively unscathed. It was not until World War II that it was heavily damaged, by explosions and bombing. It is one of the largest churches in Serbia. It was built between the two world wars, from 1931-1940 and its interior is still not fully completed.&#10;&#10;Because of the rapid growth of the city and the increase in the number of residents, it became necessary by the beginning of the twentieth century to build a bigger church in the Belgrade quarter of Palilula. Frequent wars did not allow this until 1930 when a pair of Belgrade architects, the brothers Petar and Branko Krsti&#263;, both professors of the Faculty of Architecture, designed the plans for the new St. Mark&#39;s Church. The present building of St. Mark&#39;s Church was built according to their drawings between 1931 and 1940."

<a10:updated>2010-04-18T07:08:20Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/424259e0-1007-4533-907d-aa66a84cec8b" />

<a10:author><a10:name>salea</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=salea</a10:uri></a10:author>
ugao ulica Igmanske i Dimitrija Tucovica, Beograd

<a href="http://photosynth.net/view/2a1e973a-fb22-49c7-ac4c-5a0673f54780"><img src="http://cdn2.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001200-AAINWutngSM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="ugao ulica Igmanske i Dimitrija Tucovica, Beograd" title"ugao ulica Igmanske i Dimitrija Tucovica, Beograd" /></a>

<a10:updated>2010-04-15T04:33:26Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/2a1e973a-fb22-49c7-ac4c-5a0673f54780" />

<a10:author><a10:name>salea</a10:name><a10:uri>http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx?user=salea</a10:uri></a10:author>
Studenica - the Serbian monastery

<a href="http://photosynth.net/view/8b5088fb-fc86-4af4-ad48-c0d6388a1104"><img src="http://cdn1.ps1.photosynth.net/synth/s01001100-AEITrlddlSM/metadata.synth_files/thumb.jpg" alt="Studenica - the Serbian monastery" title"Studenica - the Serbian monastery" /></a> "The monastery Studenica, dedicated to the Presentation of the Holy Virgin, is the mother-church of all Serbian temples. It was constructed over a quite long period. The first stage works were completed by the spring of 1196, when Stefan Nemanja abandoned his throne and settled in the monastery&#39;s foundation. When he later left for Hilandar, his son and successor Stefan took over the care of Studenica. Nemanja died in Hilandar in 1299. Nemanja&#39;s third son Sava, after reconciling his brothers Stefan and Vukan, moved Stefan&#39;s relics to Studenica. Under guardianship of Sava, Studenica became the political, cultural and spiritual center of medieval Serbia. Among his other endeavors, Sava composed a Typik, the rule-book where he described St. Simon&#39;s life, leaving evidence of the spiritual and monastic life of his time. Studenica enjoyed continual care by the members of the Nemanjic dynasty. King Radoslav added to the church a splendid narthex in 1235. King Milutin built a small but lovely church dedicated to saints Joachim and Anna. Since the fall of the last of the medieval Serbian states in 1459, the Turks often assaulted the monastery. The first of the significant restorations of the damage took place in 1569, when the frescoes in the Church of the Presentation were repainted. In the early seventeenth century, an earthquake and a fire befell the monastery, and historical documents and a significant part of the artistic heritage were destroyed and lost forever. The Virgin&#39;s Church is a domed single-nave basilica. At its eastern end there is a three-sided apse, while an extended narthex faces west&#59; there are also vestibules on the north and the south. In the 1230s, a large exonarthex was added. The facades were built with slabs of white marble&#59; inside, the church is revetted with tufa blocks. Externally, the Church harmoniously reconciles two architectural styles, the Romanesque and the Byzantine. The blending of these two styles eventually produced a particular style of architecture known as the Raska School."<div class="commentBlock font12">

Its magnificent, massive red brick structure is one of the finest achievements of the 20th century Serbian architecture. &#34;Even though the building is functionally museum, structurally it represents a specific monument laden with symbolics. Red bricks should evoke the blood of the murdered patriots, whilst 33 turrets of different or identical heights serve as symbolic links among 30 tombs in Sumarice park and 3 tombs in the neighbouring villages. The lack of windows symbolises the hopeless situation the captives found themselves in, inhumanely condemned to death. Museum foundations are shaped like the Cross, Christian symbol of suffering.&#34;&#10;&#10;The permanent exhibition presents the history of the massacre &#8211; its causes, occurrences, reactions&#8230; Deeply moving last messages of the victims are displayed, as well as their belongings. Besides that, the three powerful artworks &#8211; &#34;Kragujevac October&#34; by Nandor Glid, &#34;The Death of the Mastodont&#34; and &#34;Break on East&#34; by Oto Logo, in the surreal ambient of the museum, along with music and voice whispering the names of executed, make the permanent exhibition very, impressive and emotionally disturbing.&#10;&#10;Special part of the permanent exhibition is series of 27 paintings &#34;Kragujevac 1941&#34; &#8211; &#34;associative and abstract view of tragic execution in Kragujevac, raised at higher level of universal thought about drama of living in tragic relation to destruction and death&#34;, artwork of famous Serbian and Montenegrin artist Petar Lubarda. He painted the series between 1966 and 1968, and presented it to Memorial Museum in 1969. The paintings, in accordance to his will, have never been departed from Kragujevac.&#10;&#10;Memorial Museum 21st October stands at the upper end of the main street &#8211; Kralja Akeksandra I Karadjordjevica."

<a10:updated>2010-04-05T13:15:49Z</a10:updated><a10:content type="text/html" src="http://photosynth.net/view/45e0d5d9-9486-4f2b-882f-9511c8a81ed3" />
