Somehow the navigation feels backwards on spins that don't feature a central object, but very fun synth nonetheless.

Everyone too a shot from their left shoulder, one from right in front opf them and another from their right shoulder, and we took a few more to cover the wider gaps. We told everyone to shoot over the top of one of the bowls in the center of that messy table. Looking forward to seeing what you can come up with.

conwaybob (4 months ago)
Great application! So if 7 people took 26 photos, somebody took more than 3 shots? Or were there 28 photos with two culled out? I assume everyone shot the person across from them so the subject was left, center,& right in the photo, or did they quarter the shot? I fully intend to try this.

Very nice Camera! Have you done any testing using 4K Video? Would seem to make sense to capture more frames rather then less and then selectively remove the ones you want? If there are any 4K Vid Synths around please let me know...

Thanks. This was shot on my Sony RX100 in continuous shooting mode. It gives me about 2 frames per second sustained, although the speed varies a bit.

You may wonder why this spin is kind of "backward-looking". That's because this particular plane has low wings that would be in the photo if you look directly out from the plane. In fact you can see a little bit of the wing in one or two frames.

Apologies for the very late reply. No, it was not shot via video.. It was show with the Photosynth app as a set of stills. Can't rightly say why the people around me weren't bugged by it :-)

michaeldenis (Over 1 year ago)
Cool stuff, David! As a side note, I'd be very interested to learn if this PhotoSphere(tm) was shot in video or with stills.. It is fairly error-free (notes the top left of stage). What's especially notable, is that none of the people *right next to you* seem bothered of your actions. Very interesting! Prior to this latest approach, it was almost impossible to shoot something like this in a crowded area without getting a lot of gawks. I suspect that this capture approach and ICE's latest video-based rendering may mean very cool things for the medium. Expensive things, but very cool things (; In any case, great work! Thanks for sticking with it, Microsoft, Photosynth, and Team! -Michael http://iNveridux.com

rynoview, David Gedye (Photosynth Group Program Manager and owner of this account) shot this himself, by all accounts. I'm not sure who handled getting the paintings scanned. By the by, David, I've noticed that the paintings are lower resolution in this version than they were in the CTP version. Was this due to the current synther's 32MB-per-JPG limit?

jimcseke (Over 1 year ago)
Nice! But not the quick and short way of saying "nice". You know ... the word "nice" is stretched out, like "nnn...iiiiiice". Anyway, had to comment on and favorite this for 2 reasons: One reason is, my second son is coming down for the holidays and I want to try to get him to pick up this wonderful (for lack of a better word) "hobby". My favorites collection is a quick way to show him what Photosynth is all about, and some of yours will be shown along with other great synths to acheive that goal. The other reason is to wish you and yours, and to the rest of the wonderfully creative folks you work with Happy and Safe Holidays!!!

Thanks Michael. The reason that this synth feels easier to navigate than most is that it's one very simple open space -- so every spot can be seen from every other spot. Of course I made sure to choose a "scaffold" of wide angle shots to start with e.g this one: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=801210e4-f321-4fac-bf53-f74737f6b936&m=false&i=0:0:12&c=-3.28053:4.72886:-0.109222&z=415.276538545761&d=0.291586430174328:-2.34384743833674:-2.32717419856034&p=0:0&t=False . trying to get the same easily understandable navigation about places that aren't quite so openly connected is hard. We're working on making it better!

michaeldenis (Over 1 year ago)
I like this synth. It's easy to access and move between pieces. Moreover, the ability to navigate is greatly aided by the proper level of jumps between wide-, medium-, and close- shots. Hey David, what was your methodology when you shot this synth? I get the sense you tried to minimize the number of places from which you shot to improve motion in the synth-viewing experience. Is this accurate? How would you remake this synth now?

David-Photosynth-Team (Over 1 year ago)
The algorithm at the moment for chosing the starting image is to find the most "out"-ward image from the largest coordinate space, so you can make it happen if you want to. Obviously we need to let peopel choose this, but for now it's at least reasonably predictable...

madeeds (Over 1 year ago)
The synther chose a pretty good first frame. Did you figure out how to make that happen?

Oh execellent! What do I win ? Just kidding. Actually, the strange thing about my stab in the dark, was that for some reason the movie Minority Report kept popping into my mind and sure enough, he was somehow involved with the movie in a small way according to wikipedia. It is amazing to me how much minute information the brain can store.(Great for T.V. game shows like Jeopardy.) And yet I couldn't remember his name. I'm terrible with names anyways. I'll have to see if I can find any videos of him on the internet to remind myself what the heck the interview that I saw back when, was about. But anyway, that was fun. I also took the time to check out Margaret Wertheim's hyperbolic crochet talk. I have not yet listentened to a TED speaker and not been completely captivated to the end of their talk, and Margaret was no exception. I've lost track of how many people I have told about TED and Photosynth and so far no takers. Oh well, their loss

David-Photosynth-Team (Over 1 year ago)
Yes Jim. It is the dreadlocks, and it's Jaron Lanier: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaron_Lanier. Good recognition, especially because I didn't catch his face in the photo!

jimcseke (Over 1 year ago)
Favorited this synth partly because I love TED.com. I've been meaning to check out the speakers in this particular conference. Now, as for the pioneer of VR, I'm assuming you mean the gentleman with the dreadlocks. I'm going out on a limb here, be if he is the person you mean, he does look familiar. I remember watching an interview of a person who resembles him. I can't remember his name, but I believe he also is an author.(Science Fiction ....? I think...) I can see his face in my mind and I remember this particular person having very striking blue eyes. And I remember the interview being very interesting. I could be very wrong, but let me know either way. Thanks.

it would be a great idea - perhaps the interior of the cathedral...but this would be challenging to get the photos you need inside...or something completely different and abstract...no doubt I am enjoying Photosynth - it certainly brings several new dimensions to digital photography. Now we can enjoy viewing our dozens of photographs, and certainly on my travels everything is seen in a different light now - "can a good synth be made?" is the first question asked!!

David-Photosynth-Team (Over 1 year ago)
Fred -- thanks for your comments and your contributions to our embryonic community. I keep meaning to make the time to try to "synthesize" something through that keyhole by photoshopping a view of another scene into the center of the keyhole. It might work!

How To Synth Video: Gasworks Park
How To Synth Video: Gasworks Park

Not at all. I was shooting with my Canon G9 while they were making the video. We HAVE tried synthing from video before, and it definitely works but the results aren't that exciting due to the low resolution of video (even HD video), and the need to remove many many frames.

djsunkid (Over 1 year ago)
Wow! So synthy and awesome! Did you make this with frames from a video?

Very cool! It almost seems like you should take more pictures higher and lower on the far left & right of where you were standing and maybe a couple facing downward. That way you get all of the tree on your right and your left.

Beautiful- I almost feel like I am in New England again!

Nice, it reminds me of New England. Maybe fall in Seattle is not so bad.

If you use the in-arrow, you'll experience 6 shots on the approach. If instead you use the period '.', you'll see I think 14. That's because the in and out arrows like to scale area by a factor of 2, and some of the shots are more closely spaced than that. The ',' and '.' keys move through shots in their original order, and are great for 'narrative' sequences. (This is distinct from the tour order, which uses the spacebar.)

Not a day goes by when I don't worry that we've overfitted our parameters to that bloody vase.

Scott (Over 1 year ago)
That vase is in every single piece of test data the Photosynth team uses - I see it in my sleep!

blaise (Over 1 year ago)
Historical note. When David gave it to us synthed with the old tech preview bits, it was completely un-navigable. None of the directional controls worked as expected; you couldn't easily move from room to room; you couldn't tell where objects had been photographed, or look at those objects from alternate points of view. It was with this synth that we first developed and tested the object halo and panorama algorithms and UI, as well as the globally optimized arrows.
