GigaView

Thomas Hayden is a gigapixel panoramic photographer based in Portland, OR.

Focused primarily on 360, full-sphere panoramas that allow users to zoom in to explore details, my gigapixel photography has covered legendary bands like U2 and sports icons like the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as museums, retail businesses, and natural settings.

With over 380 gigapixel panoramas uploaded to Photosynth.net so far, it is my goal to become ranked among the most viewed panoramic photographers in the world.

Thank you for exploring my portfolio here. You will also find many of my images at GigaPan.com under the name "GigaView360" & 360Cities.net under Thomas Hayden.

thanks, msih. It looks to me like you've been shooting panoramas by hand and using ICE to stitch them? I would suggest a pano head, either nodal ninja or gigapan, for more precision. On my gigapan, I simply set the robot to be sure to capture the sky with some cross over in each. It will take 14 photos of the sky that ICE has to parse for the stitch. My 360s are usually 14x9, but this one is higher res at over 600 photos.

Thanks tannerbrett, and another great shot from Owachomo! I went for a pretty long hike down in the canyon at Natural Bridges, trying to find a ruin that a friendly ranger showed me ten years ago. Didn't find the one I was looking for, but it wasn't long before I found another one. Natural Bridges was home to a thriving population at one time, with people living in every nook and cranny of the canyon system. Here are the two panos I took at the Unknown ruin (note that geotag is purposefully inaccurate) http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=4c8389e9-907d-4fe8-85b4-3c28899e540c and http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=67984c6e-3b1d-4b83-995e-efc5a18a6792

@K - the easiest way is to simply shoot two full panos from the same spot. @SBCallender Thanks, but I can't take credit for the seamlessness. that goes to mattu (above) and his team at Microsoft Research who make ICE, their free stitching software. Hi Lew! That was a fun day at REI. Here is one of the shots I took there - http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=d033b078-ed66-44e5-b55b-cd35394a5a03. The Canyon presented some challenges (especially Lava Falls - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61aNgtIwOFg - I'm rowing the 3rd boat), but we all came through upright. I wasn't able to shoot nearly as much as I had hoped because there is just so much to do on a trip like that, but there are 28 panoramas in all now on the map. I discovered that Photosynth was accepting structured panoramas this summer and have moved all of my GigaPan images over to it. In fact, I have all but stopped uploading to gigapan.org, because my main interest is in the context of place that the map provides. The smooth integration of Photosynth's into Bing Maps is a big advantage for me. Send a link when you get some synths up or give me a shout to learn more about what I'm doing with this concept thayden360(at)gmail(dot)com. Thomas

cascade-lew (Over 1 year ago)
Tom, I met you back in April at REI in Portland. You were demonstrating the Gigaview system. It's great to see you survived the Grand Canyon and hopefully accomplished all you planned on doing. I just now ran across your stuff because I was browsing around on Bing Maps after getting started using PhotoSynth.com. I was just up in the gorge today taking some panorama shots. Then I came home to stitch them together and found photosynth. It looks like there are a lot of other cool tools out there too. I was about to leave on a trip to Europe when we met. Now I'll have to go through my Europe shots and see if I can photosynth some of them. Lew

GigaView (Over 1 year ago)
Glad you are enjoying the images, Tony. I've just finished uploading all 28 of the panoramas to Photosynth and geotagged them for Bing Maps. Grand Canyon GigaView was inspired by my days as a Google StreetView photographer and my first love of expedition rafting. All of the images were captured with a GigaPan Epic 100, and the project was funded through a Kickstarter.com campaign.

It is, David. This is a higher resolution scene than most of my 360s. I had some time because of the rain, but I hurried through my settings on this one. I set it up to get the best out of the rock garden, but that left the trees way too dark.

David-Photosynth-Team (Over 1 year ago)
Love the scene, but is it just me, or is the imagery a lot darker than it might be? Gigaview -- is there a reason you made it this way?

In your case the quota won't be enforced. It's mainly there to prevent people from somehow abusing the free storage.

GigaView (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks, Matt. I rarely do non-360 panos, but this garden deserved the detail and I was short on time. I think it was just over 300 shots. All of the other Japanese Garden shots are full 360, but with less res. Question: I have quite a few uploads to Photosynth now, but the storage quota still reads 0.0 GB used. Is this limit still enforced?

Hi Nathanael, I do fix my camera settings to something that I feel will work for the majority of the scene of interest. High Dynamic Range capture is always possible, but I think it takes away more than it adds in these cases. It always seems artificial to me. I would rather blow out the sky and some of the sunlit trees than to loose the feeling that I'm there under the canopy with my eyes adjusted to the lower light. Also, I'm kind of lazy and after waiting fifteen minutes for a shot, I'm ready to move on instead of shooting two or three more.

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Just gorgeous! I'd love to do some synths of this, but with the limitation of my rather weak zoom lens and needing to not stray from the path it would be a challenge for me to build a worthy point cloud. Do you select a particular aperature and focal length when you mount your camera? I'm wondering how you would go about avoiding the overexposure in the sky if that was a goal. Would you just take multiple exposures at each position and let ICE and Gigapan perform their blending?

Thanks Matt and David. I was curious as to why the horizon was so out of balance on this. Any ideas why the incorporation into Bing Maps has slowed so much? With most of my other shots, it only took a day, but none of these NYC shots have shown up there. There is a great deal of interest in the feature and it is a key advantage over competitors.

David-Photosynth-Team (Over 1 year ago)
Great work Gigaview. Matt -- thanks for that tip. We've been enjoying all your recent panos too!

mattu (Over 1 year ago)
Great spot for a pano. I really like this one. The rotation around in this one seems a bit off. This happens sometimes in these 360 bubbles when ICE can't quite figure out which way is up in the world. It would be nice if we could adjust the "up direction" on the Photosynth web site. But, currently that isn't a feature that we offer. You can however fix this in ICE. Click on the 3d cube icon to get into orientation view. Then adjust the pano so that it looks upright, in other words the horizon is in the right place. Hope this is useful.
