K

Ken, Photosynth Test Manager.

I got my first camera, a CoolPix 950 in 1999. That year I took something like 20,000 photos, most of them blurry or otherwise horrible. I fell in love with the immediate feedback I could get and with some hard work I can now share as many as 2 or 3 out of 100 photos.

My photographic interests vary, I like taking on different projects and using them as learning opportunities. For example 2007 was the year of Strobist for me, I devoured the site and made as many light modifiers as I could. Other projects included night photography, astrophotography, stop motion, panoramas, and blueprint photography. Recently I've been playing with stereo photography.

You can reach me at kreppart@microsoft.com.

Terrific! Your camera must be very good. But it's a pity that I can't see the foot place.

OOh, and there's also a "shadowy figure" as you come to the top of the stairs from the basement.

Ha Ha. I love the "Portal"

K (Over 1 year ago)
This isn't the champion but I know there are only a few that are larger. We don't really want to call attention to very large synths because they're going to be very slow for the average user. I only did this as a test to see if I could get 4 floors to connect. I got three which is pretty good!

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
So, Ken, is this the reigning champion for most images in a synth? Most points in the primary pointcloud? Most points cumulatively from the entire synth? It would be interesting to have some sort of Top 100 biggest synths somewhere. I know that's really not the primary or even ideal use case for Photosynth but I know that plenty of us would find it interesting.

Cliff (Over 1 year ago)
This is amazing, Ken! I agree, finding your way between rooms isn't seamless, but with the highlights it is very easy to view the whole synth. I should make one every year to document the progress on the house.

I don't think there are any MS offices in the Smith Tower any longer. It was fun while it lasted! Nowadays the whole Photosynth team sits in Bellevue.

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
I remember from when I came by that Microsoft was having offices renovated on the fourth floor as well. Do you know if those were those ever finished or used? Are there any Microsoft personnel left in Smith Tower any more or has everyone moved to Live Labs East, etc.? Where does your team work now; from the main Redmond campus or does Bing Maps operate out of an auxiliary location?

I don't know anything about the Andrew, the test lead for Streetside told me they use Eugene. I don't think it's anything official, just a pet name more than anything.

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Right. I've heard Blaise call him 'Andrew' as well, I believe. In fact, both Eugene and Andrew in the same talk, so I was just wondering where the names were coming from and what their significance was. Does each state have a different nickname? (e.g. Standing, Running, Touching)

K (Over 1 year ago)
Eugene is one of our nicknames for the little blue Streetside guy.

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
So... this has to be a reference, but I'm missing it. Care to enlighten me? Haven't I heard at least one other name applied to this figure as well, or is there a small community of them?

That's right! Unfortunately I only took my point & shoot on that trip hence the blurry images. I'd love to see a higher quality synth of this machine. All of the amazing computers on that floor actually.

the poncho is made to pitch as a shelter, it has loops for guylines on the corners and in critical spots. it did take some practice to figure out how to put it up but i found some great instructions on the net (the ray way method).

Is that a special kind of poncho made just for this... or are you just that clever?

Good question sastay. No special processing here, I made this using the same synther that everyone else has. Trust me, if we had something better we'd release it! :)

sastay (Over 1 year ago)
Hi K Congratulations, impressing synth. One question: Since you are member of the Microsoft team - have you carried out any manual processing or was this synth generated fully automatically, i.e. if I'd upload the same pictures shown here, would this tool create the same point cloud and, hence, synth?

M-arcus (Over 1 year ago)
Very nice synth!

TonyErnst (Over 1 year ago)
I actually really dig the point cloud. Especially that of the huge downed tree on the beach

K (Over 1 year ago)
Yes, that was our campsite. I'm pretty sure I tried to connect the beach to the campsite but didn't get enough photos.

K (Over 1 year ago)
it's actually designed to use solid fuel tablets (esbit). i don't think you could use anything else effectively although i tried to make an alcohol burner using a tea light holder. as for the navigation, something is definitely wrong. it could have gotten confused by the logos on the can but more likely it's because i was taking photos from directly overhead. the algorithms that determine which way is up can get confused when you're pointing the camera close to straight up or straight down. i bet if i resynth without the straight down images it'll come out better.

arnielarson (Over 1 year ago)
This synth is disorienting to navigate, it feels like I am dangling upside down from a rope trying to focus on the ground, continuously changing perspective.

arnielarson (Over 1 year ago)
That is very cool... do you just burn wood and paper and anything else available?
