K

Ken, Photosynth Test Manager.

I got my first camera, a CoolPix 950 in 1999. That year I took something like 20,000 photos, most of them blurry or otherwise horrible. I fell in love with the immediate feedback I could get and with some hard work I can now share as many as 2 or 3 out of 100 photos.

My photographic interests vary, I like taking on different projects and using them as learning opportunities. For example 2007 was the year of Strobist for me, I devoured the site and made as many light modifiers as I could. Other projects included night photography, astrophotography, stop motion, panoramas, and blueprint photography. Recently I've been playing with stereo photography.

You can reach me at kreppart@microsoft.com.

@K - the easiest way is to simply shoot two full panos from the same spot. @SBCallender Thanks, but I can't take credit for the seamlessness. that goes to mattu (above) and his team at Microsoft Research who make ICE, their free stitching software. It is incredibly smart. Glad to hear it was such a great show in Austin. Make sure to send out a tweet or two to that effect and mention @sayjaffe, @KirklandRecords, @RhettMiller, & @old9s. Three days after shooting this image, I was on U2's 360 Tour stage shooting a 20 GigaPixel Fan Cam image for the U2 website. Here's that one with Facebook integration - http://www.u2.com/gigapixelfancam/110604/ I'll be in LA next weekend shooting two more shows. Can not wait...

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Lost, I'm surprised that I never commented on this inspiring synth. You certainly challenged me to try larger structures and I'm sure you did the same for others. I wonder if the inner and outer walls could be tightened up by adding a short orbit of the left and right sides of each doorway at minimum and possibly the same treatment of the top of the doorway as well. I know that means more photos which is a problem, but I'd love to see it done. Looking forward to your coming synths when you next have some free time.

Glad you came back to this Void23. Cant wait to see the final version

Void23 (Over 1 year ago)
This was an attempt to "fix" a previous synth of the same lava tube by taking some more photos of area I thought was the weekest. Although it shows up as "100% Synthy", It looks like I didn't get enough overlap in a few places, so the point cloud is broken into several chunks. To get the entire tube to show up in overhead mode, I'll probably have to wait a few months until the snow melts, then go back and rephotograph the outside parts of the tube. I'll probably erase this synth in a few days, but the first one I did, highlighted and geotagged, is still up with the rest of my synths.

K (Over 1 year ago)
That is too cool! Switch to overhead view (hit T for the shortcut) and you can see the structure of the whole tube. I'm impressed! It's kind of hard to navigate though, would you mind adding some highlights? While you're at it a geocode would let people find this on the map.

Awesome! I really like this space. Super interesing spot for a gigapixel image. I know that it would be great if you could edit the output of ICE. Hey Nathanael, Thanks for the investigation. I looked into it a while back and it turns out this is actually pretty easy to get working. Unfortunately, the team is very booked and I'm not actively working on iSynth right now :( If we resume working on mobile stuff in the future, I'm sure we'll add this feature.

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Actually... that was Aseem Kishore, not Daniel, and Aseem's schedule seems overbooked already, so perhaps that's not the direction to pursue, but I still maintain that since he's already done that sort of thing, he'd be someone useful to speak with.

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Greg, for what it's worth, Daniel Gasienica over on the Seadragon team pulled off launching Seadragon Mobile from within Seadragon Ajax on http://seadragon.com so the same thing should be more than possible with Photosynth. To me, this would bridge an absolutely massive gap in satisfaction, allowing me to open unlisted synths, more quickly move between viewing and commenting, etc. etc. Some way would definitely be needed to drop back out to Safari on the synth's page from within iSynth (moreso than simply going to the author's profile) as well to make the experience sweet, but I believe that it's all possible. I know that iSynth doesn't have the official blessing and the team most likely doesn't want to have any obligations to make sure that the app continues to work with the site in the future, but maybe Daniel could work something up for the site if no one on your team has the time with you coding up the way to drop back to Safari after viewing a synth.

LucAskAng (Over 1 year ago)
Really cool.

Greg (Over 1 year ago)
Nathanael, No idea what the technical challenge of a feature like that would be. I'd imagine it would either be very easy or completely impossible (for the reasons you mentioned). I don't know what the future holds for Photosynth on the iPhone, but I'll certainly keep your suggestion in mind if I continue to develop it.

Sorry for the misleading information down the path of my posts: There are in summary 3 panoramas from this view: * Pano 1 and 2 are 10cm apart -> converted to a 3D stereo panorama: http://hdview.at/anaglyph/flakturm2-ana.html * Pano 1 and 3 use a ~5m stereo base -> used to create this synth You can best notice the wide stereo base in the Direct3D viewer when zooming out and switching through the images: You will notice how far the viewpoint changes between images from the left and right "eye" I'll upload the 10cm base images and a mesh of all 3 later this evenening to see how the synths differ...

K (Over 1 year ago)
This is really cool. This is the one with a 10cm stereo base right? I think Photosynth would prefer a wider base - if you hit P after the points are loaded the scene is very realistic. If you hit T to view from top down you can see that the depth information was limited by the relatively small stereo base.

Hi, Jim. I did metnion white balance on this synth: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=613bee1e-5f26-402a-b40a-a2607461de69 and this synth: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=6f8642f9-71bd-42ab-860a-6b1fa1f745fd The synther is quite robust to white-balance problems and can usually synth photos together with very different white balances. When I said it improved the synth, I meant that the pictures looked better, not that it synthed more completely. I look forward to seeing what you put together last weekend.

jimcseke (Over 1 year ago)
Hey madeeds, Jim here. I was skimming through some synths, and remember, (I think it was you) mentioning something about the white balance in your photos. And it somehow improving the synth. I might be completely off base here, but if it is not too much trouble, could you elaborate on this. Or point me to, perhaps a FAQ which covers this topic. Hey the weekend is almost here. Guess what I will be doing with my free time. Happy synthing and have a great weekend.
