MammothPaleo_Guy

I'm the bonebed curator at an indoor, in-situ Pleistocene dig in SoDak. I'm hoping to use Photosynth as an alternative to LIDAR 3D mapping.

Tony, If I told you the details, it wouldn't be secret! Broadly though, what makes it special is: 1. How the (many) images were obtained and . . . 2. How the resulting synth will be used.

OK, Ill bite. What's top secret about this?

The point cloud from overhead is pretty fantastic!

Yes it is -- good eye.

is this the mammoth site in Hot Springs?

That is a very cool point cloud, what a great idea to use this technology with paleontology

Agreed. This is a great job. Another problem with the face is that the color is too flat. Also, it appears a bit over-exposed in certain picutres. One way to overcome this is to take a few closer shots (and some in-between to connnect everything) of the face. That way the eyes/nose/other small details can make a difference.

Scott (Over 1 year ago)
The Corythosaurus has wonderfully textured skin - which really helps. Great work, and a tremendous point cloud.

Hey MammothPaleo_Guy -- Glad to read what you're doing with Photosynth, and very interested to hear your thoughts on what you'd like to see in Photosynth to aid your work. Please feel free to drop me an email at dgedye@microsoft.com.

Hey, Glad I found you. I visited The Mammoth Site a couple weeks ago and took over 200 photos just for the purpose of synthing them - maybe we can work together on it. Fossa, aka Kathy, the Earthwatch Webmaster

Yes, this is a common problem people are having. The figurines are on a turn table. The wall matches in all of them, but is inconsistent with the motion of the figurines, so half the images end up reconstructing the wall and the other half reconstruct the bear. It leads to a very confusing synth. If you put them on a textured surface and walk around them taking pictures, then there is only one consistent motion and the synth should turn out better.

Scott (Over 1 year ago)
This *should* have come out great. Drew and I will look into why it didn't synth so well.

I think it'll work really quite well if you go in and take a ton of shots. Photosynth isn't particularly effective with existing photos, usually because the baseline between shots is too wide.

I think you just need a little more field of view, and more distance between the foreground and background.

My first 100% synthy syth. [Moetherium] was an early proboscidean (or elephant-relative) from Africa. We had an old bust of it in storage, so I thought I'd give synthing it a shot. I'm pretty pleased, but any recomendations would be appreciated -- my goal is to make this useful in paleontological research.

This is my first experiment with Photosynth. The object is a cast of the [Arctodus simus] skull excavated at the paleontological site where I work. It got a low synth rating, but the point cloud looks pretty good. I took pictures from 360 degrees, so I'm a little confused on why only half the points seem to be there, though.
