I don't think it's as simple as the background issue. Photosynth needs matching feature points in order to connect things. Instead of "doing it at night", what if you added a white sky to everything and tried to "bind" shots looking up (from the legs of the dragon/knight). That way the background would realistically be white?

Pierrot21 (Over 1 year ago)
Hi! I didn't understand 3 vs 2 pictures (I know 'to bind' but usually you bind only 2 pictures) In this other synth the big difference is that there is no (same) background: white background for the object and white sky. Then he made a good job by puting the top of the roof into the white background. I don't think it's possible to calculate a background in such a textured street as mine. But you give me the idea to introduce the knight into a dark street at night ...

Marvin (Over 1 year ago)
A good example of this is: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=ebf3e9ad-c0f5-43a0-b3da-fc3c689b62cc Where he managed to get the pointcloud of the object into the scene.

Marvin (Over 1 year ago)
Hi Pierrot. I used the word "bind" because that's what you used in a previous comment. Basically, if you look at the pointcloud, you'll find that while each of the knight and dragon have their own (very nice) pointcloud. However, you never see their pointclouds combined. If you want both the dragon and the knight in the same pointcloud, you'll need more than one picture of them in the combined scene (at least 3)

Pierrot21 (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks for your advice I can understand #1 and maybe I'll do it; but I don't understand #2 bindind 3 pictures, do you mean a zoom effect?

You're right. This is not ideal behavior. For example, we don't want there to be two pictures of the statue here: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=ed3300e2-1f66-42ee-9420-5f25c1a775a4&i=0:0:1&z=446.79178637965265&g=0&p=3.3236e-049:2.37471e-049&m=false&c=-1.25856:-0.355612:-0.0259593&d=-1.31757:0.780252:0.862574 I can't really comment on when/if this will be fixed, but the product team is aware of it and we're prioritizing it. The more customers and synths we hear about with this particular problem, the higher it will be prioritized.

Scott (Over 1 year ago)
Hi Pierrot21, the team is investigating the best way to improve results when the image planes are incorrectly placed on the background.

Pierrot21 (Over 1 year ago)
This one could be seen as better, but I miss the background (I resized all the pics); so it's not the good solution http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=8A0BD4ED-6DBD-4F93-8084-962B53DEECB6

Pierrot21 (Over 1 year ago)
Ok,ok; thank you for answering. Don't you consider that it is a big bug? The pictures are correct and complete. I come back to what I asked before in the 'get satisfaction' for a next version or release: telling to the synther you are viewing around an object (turntable or statue or any object) and the synther has to forget the background. I agree, it's easy to ask and difficult to realize ;-)

madeeds (Over 1 year ago)
What's happening here is that the building is more textured than the statue. Each picture is being "hung" on the building, so when you move, it moves with the building. Try holding down the 'e' and ';' keys starting from here: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=ed3300e2-1f66-42ee-9420-5f25c1a775a4&i=0:0:2&z=366.09600320000004&g=0&p=-2.83984e-014:5.5803e-014&m=false&c=-0.433721:-0.856254:-0.0152164&d=-1.48523:0.185635:0.200557 Then push the 'c' key for a bit. You'll see a few photos pegged to the facade of the building and one on the sculpture in the foreground.

Yes I did it more simple: walking from the doo to front and then turning back, with some pictures on the sides (to get the glasses in the transept) I corrected a few picures too: the walls around the windows were to dark, and the walls around the gate were too white (then I got this bad blue colour). The most important I think is that they were less columns / pillars to fool the synther

Fred_Oxford (Over 1 year ago)
sorry! you are right! I am however interested to know why this one synthed better than the other one? I tried to cut down the numbe rof photos on the Cologne cathedral and re-run the synth and it failed badly..did you retake these with different settings?

I'm not sure we need light: if there is too much sun, you have big black shadows

Fred_Oxford (Over 1 year ago)
Pierrot, this is only achievable with very good light with so few pictures I think on a relatively small building - if you look at the following: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=3f5e1a76-99f2-4885-ba37-eeacfb07d686 and http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=3f5e1a76-99f2-4885-ba37-eeacfb07d686 you will see with relatively few photos on a medium sized building the point clouds are not too bad. This was not the case with a bulding of the immense proportions of the Cologne cathedral on a fairly dark cold day...with point and shoot camera.

Hi Houdan and Madeeds! I don't know if it is the same bug in this one? http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=ED3300E2-1F66-42EE-9420-5F25C1A775A4 The point cloud is not bad (or even good) but viewing the pictures is strange with double statue !?!

Pierrot21 (Over 1 year ago)
Hi Houdan and Madeeds! I first thought it was like a spam trying to drive me to a commercial web-site and was quite angry! I'm very sad seing my little dragon lost in the flames of hell on your picture ;-) I'm very happy to read that 1) you both are in the Photosynth team 2) you read our posts, 3) you have a look on our synths (normal in a beta-version) 4) you will upgrade the synther 5) you make sort of an announcement ;-) I have been driving projects, writing and testing programs (business not art, or graphics) and it has been a hobby for one month to explore capabilities / limits of photosynth; sorry I'm not in the team, I have a lot of ideas and observations. It would be more easy to send direct emails ... About the reddragon: it's a very very big bug in reddragon-1 by clicking in the middle, it will show something that does't exist (head down). I was glad to see reddragon-3 is quite good as there is no more scale in the pictures. Have a nice week-end!

houdan (Over 1 year ago)
Pierrot21, sorry I forgot to do a self-introduction. I am a engineering in the Photosynth team working on the synther. It looks like the link I posted in the last comment is not a valid link. Thanks to madeeds' reminder (who is a test engineer in our team), I got the right link of that photos here: http://i43.tinypic.com/ngwwnn.jpg, which shows after new reconstruction, all cameras go all the way around. You will be able to resynth this collection and get better result next time when we upgrade the synther. :-)

madeeds (Over 1 year ago)
'houdan' is one of the engineers here on the Photosynth team who wrote a large percentage of the code that constructs a photosynth. He's working on the next, better, version of the synther. We tried using his new code on your imagery, and it looks like a big improvement. Unfortunately, the "tinypic" link he sent doesn't show the image he wanted to show you. I'll work with houdan to get you the right picture.

Agreed. The problem with this one is that the majority of features come from the background. When you moved the dragon relative to the background it messed things up. RedDragon-2 and RedDragon-3 are good examples where this problem has been corrected.

Fred_Oxford (Over 1 year ago)
I suspect 2 issues affected the synth - the grooves on the green base, and the joint in the background - cardinal had this problem with the Cochin dragon - he has re-shot that and will upload soon - the point cloud was jumbled due to the system synthing on two lines on the background

Unfortunately many of the European cathedrals a both huge and dark inside, so you need summer sunshine through the stained glass to do a good interior shoot. This one is great. I am impressed with the outcome at ISO 1200. This would be near impossible with the Cologne Cathedral (I did get some good interior shots when I was there, but not enough to do a synth) it is just to tall inside and too dark.

Pierrot21 (Over 1 year ago)
Thank you, but I'm not so glad about the result: for example it's very difficult to get a view on the color-glasses in the right or left sides of the transept. You can see the great organ above the front door, but it's impossible to visit the baptistery ... I'll try to bring some more pictures

Photoshop (or Gimp) is what I don't want to use; too difficult to inverse white to black points and black to white background. The point cloud is some times very interesting, because Photosynth guess what's not on the picture: inside the object from below, top of the object, and it's transparent! They did a great job§ Have a look on my 'TB 98-1' 'TB 99-1' 'MaM Vosne Romanée' food-cans and 'borne incendie'; you access them by tag 'pierrot21'

madeeds (Over 1 year ago)
I saw your comment on GetSat. If you want to print the point-cloud, the best way to do that right now involves some advanced usage of a program like Gimp or Photoshop. I think that the point cloud is most interesting when it's animated. Why not just print the photos?
