Rick

Hi! I'm Rick Szeliski, one of the co-inventors of the Photo Tourism work that led to the creation of Photosynth (see http://research.microsoft.com/IVM/PhotoTours/ for more details).

I love to travel and take photographs, which is what first inspired me to create the kind of immersive 3D photo-based experiences you can see on Photosynth. (I've also been doing research in 3D computer vision and image-based rendering for over two decades.)

I hope you enjoy some of my personal synths.

Wow! I'd always heard that Iguazu falls were spectacular, but I didn't realize that there were walkways that let you peer right over the falls and yet be surrounded by them. Simply amazing!

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Lost, I'm surprised that I never commented on this inspiring synth. You certainly challenged me to try larger structures and I'm sure you did the same for others. I wonder if the inner and outer walls could be tightened up by adding a short orbit of the left and right sides of each doorway at minimum and possibly the same treatment of the top of the doorway as well. I know that means more photos which is a problem, but I'd love to see it done. Looking forward to your coming synths when you next have some free time.

lostinthetriangle (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks blaise, I struggled to upload the pictures (out of memory errors) since then the software has been updated so I might retry a large upload again. I also wish I had more time this summer for shooting pictures but have been way to busy. Be glad when things slow down here in the triangle!

Of course, the "whoaaa!" moment on going through the archway, and suddenly... that. In fact there's a lot of "suddenly" moments - the sundial, the barometer/thermometer (looks like the weather will continue good, if cold ~8'c...) and the young-offender community-service lookin' guys coming to repaint its plinth, the balloon guy... The infants taking a ride on the lion, and the troupe of high-viz-clad junior school kids on a daytrip. Forget-me-not's Swedish (?) Bear & friends The battallion of "rock doves" (flying rats!) mobbing the fountain statue, then showing exactly how tame and fearless they are in a macro moment. Unexpected EXTREME CLOSE UP on a random statue :D The bonus night-time & winter shots, even if some of them don't synth up with the rest of it. And many others I either can't remember or don't want to further spoil! ...just fahhhbulous, dahrling! Looks like a nice - if cold! - place to live.

tahrey (Over 1 year ago)
Waaaaoooww... a very definite FAV so I can show this to (of all people!) my mother later. I think it might give her a weekend trip idea for a start! This is just fantastic, Matt - are you a pro, or just a skilled/lucky amateur? A brilliant subject, very well chosen, and expertly mapped with your camera. Everyone, don't forget to zoom in to catch all the brilliant little details you might otherwise miss (and might even have done so if you were there in person!). The pics seem to be either 2 or 3mpx, so there's scope for reasonable enlargement even at fullscreen on a typical monitor. Then zoom out in other places, fullscreen, for excellent peripheral-vision effects. I've just lost about an hour of my life to this :-) but hey, the plane journey would have been 3x longer. So many favourite bits, they need a second comment.

estollnitz (Over 1 year ago)
They drill holes through the blocks of ice and insert colored plastic tubes containing the lights. I'm not sure whether the lights are LEDs or conventional bulbs like large Christmas lights. With night-time temperatures around -20 C (-4 degrees F), they don't really have to worry about the ice melting!

Rick (Over 1 year ago)
This looks really magical. What kind of colored lights do they use for the lighting?

Always room for improvement, but I think ICE did OK here considering these were long exposures and the waves dont line up precisely

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Does anyone on the Photosynth or ICE teams have RED cameras? I'd love to see the results of stills taken with them in low light. As beautiful as this is at a distance, the stitching is a bit rough around the edges in this case.

Flying_Scotscam (Over 1 year ago)
Stunning, stunning images!!! Would love to shoot in a location like this.

cmullins (Over 1 year ago)
I think these colors are original, but it's been a few years since I took the original images, so I'm honestly not 100% certain. I frequently shoot with filters (such as the Singh-Ray Gold-N-Blue polarizer) which skews colors fairly signifigantly.

jimcseke (Over 1 year ago)
I don't know how new you are to this site, but you definetly brought out some noticeable synths. Although I am amazed with "Lana's Face"... as with any subject or scene, there are many takes on how the final synth is presented. I like to check out a lot of other synther's work, and occasionally I'll check out their favorites. I usually leave with new favorites I otherwise would not have found. The favorites I collect are either just plain beautiful and/or inspiring. For example, a beautiful colorful and interesting face synth by dariusmonsef "Head of Greg" http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=737b791a-0765-46b2-bd5e-e12afc54bfea . With his synth, you get a feeling of Greg's personality. I think it's the eyes and the beard. Each of my favorites show a hint of what is possible. If you enjoyed making your synths and hopefully you plan to make more, check out my favs and then check out my fav's favs. I hope you find favs to inspire you for your next projects.

Agreed. This is a wonderful synth. I love the ability to zoom in on each insect individually, and to rotate around to see it in 3D. The effect might be even better if all of the images (white backgrounds) were consistently color balanced.

Globe 2.0
Globe 2.0
Rick (Over 1 year ago)
Yes, nicely done!

Mike11 (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks for the comment! The globe is sitting on a lazy susan to that I could easily spin it around. This is actually on a small table covered in a plain black t-shirt. Behind the globe I put 2 chairs with their backs facing the globe and hung a big black (actually really dark blue) towel between them. I have 3 bright desk lamps shining from different angles onto the globe. Since the globe was illumiated so brightly I could use a fast exposure which eliminated anything that is dim, like the black background. In the original high-res pictures you can still kind of see these background objects, but before uploading I used Picasa to make all the pictures smaller and slighty decrease the image quality (for smaller files for uploading). For my first try I didn't have any of the black background and the rest of the room showed up, so I came up with this to eliminate that.

AdamSynth (Over 1 year ago)
Awesome! I love old maps and globes, and you've synthed this one wonderfully. Out of curiosity, how did you get such a good empty black backround?
