Sphynctre

I'm a computer-geek by day, and a lazy genius/ninja by night. I'm also a mediocre photography hobbiest. My work and vacations take me to a few interesting places, and I've been trying to create better Photosynth's ever since I discovered this amazing engine. I now see the world in point clouds and potential synthiness, it's great. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Cameras: Nikon D300S (synths prior to 11/09 were taken with Nikon D50 and Canon S2IS) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Computer: Dell Precision T7400, Dual Quad-Core 3.2GHz, 12GB RAM, 1TB SATA RAID5, Nvidia 1GB 9800, Nvidia GTX285 1GB, (3) 24" Viewsonic LCD, Windows 7 Pro x64

Wow! That was one of the best synths I have seen so far. I just started 2 or 3 weeks ago but. Your work is certainly inspiring

Sphynctre (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks Nathanael! It doesn't come through in the pictures, but I enjoyed making the synth as much as viewing it. This is a really cool building and cemetery. When I started Photosynth-ing, I had a point-and-shoot camera that was hard to see through and slow to take pictures. With my new camera, I can look through the viewfinder and walk at the same time, taking pictures the whole time. Yes, this is the largest synth I've done yet. I was testing Photosynth on a new box that I built (8 proc. x64, 32GB RAM, 14TB) to see if I could break my 800 photo limit. I'm sure I'll be doing more "testing" later =)

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Wow. I cycled through the pointcloud in the order that you took the photos a few times and I have to say that your method of movement was really very inspiring... very natural as though I were actually walking around the church myself and glancing about me or keeping my eyes on the curve of the wall as I walked around it. I just have to reiterate how well done this is technically. The sense of sunlight and shade within the pointcloud is something very well captured in this synth as well. Cheers!

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
This is your grandest scale public synth by far, I would have to say. Great work, Tan. Thanks for sharing this architecture with us.

This is the first synth I saw and still one of my favourites. The point cloud is amazing!

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
@Tan_Nguyen, I really do admire this synth ever since I found it when it was featured on the front page back in the day. It's one of my favorites. @cok, It's totally possible. I knew a guy in the jungle that taught his cat to roll over, sit up, beg, speak, etc. As for synthing cats... are you aware that they like to sleep in sunlit patches? Get out the camera and shoot with all your stealth!

abbaka (Over 1 year ago)
it's good you have a dog! i have a cat and I want to synth her, but she wouldn't stay still for 2 seconds, not even saying about 2-3 minutes :) (how could you train a cat??)i'm not asking, it's rethoric question) very cute and adorable dog with a nose, anyway :)

Sphynctre (Over 1 year ago)
Yes David, my ship was stationary and I watched as the Pride approached, then did a 180-degree turn, and then backed up beside the dock. I tried to be careful about including too much of the background for fear that it would smear the point cloud since the photos would then have moving and stationary objects

David-Photosynth-Team (Over 1 year ago)
Very cool Tan. This was a case of letting the ship come past you, rather than you moving along it's side, right?

You could always hardwire the slideshow to play in filename order in the synth editor. Switching on 'Photo up', rather than 'World up' might not be such a terrible idea either. I love that shallow water... such amazing colours.

I have scoured your website looking for an email address in order to email you and your family! I absolutely need to know how you managed to make the Word Girl costume so perfectly! Please email me at devan_konn@yahoo.com. I can't seem to find out how you guys made it and cannot find one that's similar and so well made. Thanks!

This is wicked cool! I could totally see this spooking out little (and not so little) kids.

Sphynctre (Over 1 year ago)
Just Halloween. Our neighbors don't really like the fact that when Christmas rolls around, all we do is put a dusty wreath on the door. We really like scaring small children, and there aren't many holidays where the kids just come to your door. I just read your profile Nathan! I often wish I could get into climbing. If it weren't for this near-fatal lazy streak, I probably would.

David, thank YOU (and your team) for providing a forum where I and others can document moments like this. You rock... and roll. Robut777, I echo your sentiments. I also wouldn't actually nominate Beck for president. He's entertaining, and has some good points, but he's far from my ideal presidential candidate.

Hey Tan -- this has got to be our best "event synth". Thank you for documenting it and highlighting it.

Funny thing, Nathanael... when I took these photos in the airport - I hadn't discovered Photosynth yet! I wasn't actually trying to create a synth, I was just trying to take enough pictures that when I came back to my pictures (years later) that I could decipher what had happened. I discovered Photosynth months after these pictures were taken, so I just threw them into Photosynth to see what would happen. Yes, if I had it to do over again, it would probably be at least 500 photos of a soda machine =)

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Well... time's short in an airport but I would love to see a synth of illuminated liquids like this with full coverage. The point cloud should be a thing of beauty as long as you could get enough close ups.

I can totally relate to 'I now look at everything with the duality of "real life" and "point cloud"'. :) Regardless of whether it was quite what you were hoping for the point cloud *is* very much beautiful. If there's a setting on your lights to have them stay on solidly, rather than blinking I think I'd try it the next time you've got a tree decorated. You might even through in a tripod just for extra clarity. I think that the result would be absolutely spectacular! Give me a shout if you give it another go this year.

Funny you mention that Cubby1996... now that I think about it, 217 photos in 10 minutes averages 1 photo every 2.76 seconds. I'm going to make a new estimate of 5-6 minutes to take the photos, and 1 hour to synth. My camera can do about 3 photos per second in good light, but I was probably shooting at more like 1 shot every second or two as I moved around the book.

CoryRS (Over 1 year ago)
Only ten minutes to take 217 Photos?! Whoah!

Sphynctre (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks! This synth took about 10 minutes to shoot (take all the pictures) and about 1 hour to synth and upload. Thanks for asking.

CoryRS (Over 1 year ago)
How long did it take for it to put it all together?! This is pretty cool!
