Sphynctre

I'm a computer-geek by day, and a lazy genius/ninja by night. I'm also a mediocre photography hobbiest. My work and vacations take me to a few interesting places, and I've been trying to create better Photosynth's ever since I discovered this amazing engine. I now see the world in point clouds and potential synthiness, it's great. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Cameras: Nikon D300S (synths prior to 11/09 were taken with Nikon D50 and Canon S2IS) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Computer: Dell Precision T7400, Dual Quad-Core 3.2GHz, 12GB RAM, 1TB SATA RAID5, Nvidia 1GB 9800, Nvidia GTX285 1GB, (3) 24" Viewsonic LCD, Windows 7 Pro x64

And less popular is President Obama, who had a lesser audience, but you know, we don't want to talk about that do we.

A few comments: How did he come up with 500K? I know, he just guessed. Pulled it out of the air and reported it as facts. This is now he does most his research. His gut tells him (i.e God). If someone what to come up with another scientific method to come up with a different number go right ahead. But just saying I feel like, or it looks like to me, or I was there, it was 50 Million is not saying anything. I find if funny/sad that he clams the media is always misleading and reporting lies and he report this lie that can be check and he still stand by the lie. Last: I also find if hilariousness that his joke that the media reported 1000 people was closer to the fact then his report of 500,000. Or even the 300,000 or some others. That is only wrong by 500%. One more: still a lot of people why do you need to lie? I hope people that went had fun!

This picture was taken at noon. Why not at 10 when the most people where there to hear Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. There are alot of empty chair in the front that were full when they were speaking. I bet alot of people left by this time

David, thank you for pointing that one out. Even in the additional pictures the trees completely obscure the view of the people below. Based on the photographs I've seen posted here so far, there is no possible way that the entire crowd was counted. Also, based on the photographs posted here, there is no way that the crowd density on the northern side of the reflecting pool, especially on the WWII Memorial end, could have been accurately estimated. The vantage point of the camera is too far away.

Congratulations! This panorama won week 11 of the Summer Xbox Contest. It will be featured on the Best of Bing Maps section of the iOS App, and you'll soon be the proud owner of an Xbox 360 with Kinect prize package.

Sphynctre (Over 1 year ago)
I wasn't there, and don't actually know where this is, but taking the geotag location of Black Rock, NV, and the tags of "summer 2011 contest", I found that this is most likely the Burning Man Festival that just took place earlier this month.

Looking at other pictures, it looks like a remake of MAD MAX movies! Though it was going to be the Salt Lake Races, but not... I really don't like have pictures without comments, just a simple one would be great.

It is very interesting to know that famous monuments can be seen in an interactive manner in which are trying to get close to what you really want and see the details. Maybe follow up to what Dan Brown wrote in his books. Regards, http://www.muwasalat.com

i find it hard to think that it was possible in those day that some one would be able to point with sutch clarity

@Jonathan When I went in, I was expecting the same thing. However almost everyone was taking pictures, so after deliberating for a bit I just did it too. The guards were completely resigned and just stood chatting with each other. The lights were dimmed (it looks even brighter in these photos because of the low f/# I was shooting on) so just about everybody without DSLRs and fast lenses were getting naught but blurry garbage.

Jonathan (Over 1 year ago)
How were you able to take this many photos without being busted? When I was there, I remember the guards constantly saying 'No Photos'

Thanks Nathanael. That approach you mentioned might prove interesting. I have a couple of (very) large synths in the making, still trying to optimize them.

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Oh, also, I meant to say that the reason that resolution shouldn't matter is that all synthing uses only a 1.5 version of each photo to do the matching. I wholeheartedly endorse the uploading of the full resolution photos, though, both for viewing as well as being able to see more dense pointclouds generated from the full resolution photos in the future.

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
I know I'm commenting on ancient history but for what it's worth, the limits of the synther are not defined by a hard number of photos or the size (either resolution or megabytes) of the photos, but rather the number of image features in each image and how many of the images correspond to one location. The limit, in my experience, is defined solely by a maximum number of image features and how many of them correspond to each another. The more intensive any one part of the synth, the more strenuous the scene reconstruction becomes as the number of photos increase past the hundreds. One method I have found to sidestep this choking point, if you have more than enough coverage, is to thin out the images for any given version of the synth by only using odd or even numbered images. The other obvious alternative is to simply break the scene into discrete objects and have some good overlap among your synths of the place (i.e. the end of one overlaps the start of the next).

jpamado (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks for all your comments. I've been using the synther on different computers, starting with 2 GB, going through 4 and 6 GB, until the current machine with 20 GB. Memory does matter, although the Photosynth process runs in 32-bit space. Synths that stopped with 4 GB were finished with 6 GB. When 6 GB weren't enough, I started using 20 GB. Even so, before trying this last synth, I ran another one with close to 1050 photos and it bombed with a network error. So, things still work by trial and error up to a certain point.

This is a really impressive synth. You really captured a lot of detail here.

Hey Joshua, this is actually a DC-2, not a DC-3. The DC-2 is a very rare plane, and the DC-3 is a very common plane which is still used in production around the world. BTW, absolutely love Photosynth... totally addicted.

It would be interesting to add some pictures of Obama into the synth and see if his face gets matched to any of the stickers on the car so you can click on a sticker on the car and jump into the other set of pictures.
