Copy that on the stitching location. By pixel drift I mean the difference in coordinates between different resolutions of the same part of the scene.

TonyErnst (Over 1 year ago)
They're not stitched on the server actually, stiching happens on the phone. Not quite sure what you mean by pixel drift, but this probably isnt the best example: dark, with a low shutter speed/high ISO and crappy phone camera lens; makes for difficult tracking

Nathanael (Over 1 year ago)
Leave it to you to shoot the first artistic pano with the mobile app. =) Something I've noticed is that the pixel drift between different resolutions seems to be quite significant in mobile panos when compared to ICE panos. Since they're beein stitched on the server, is there any way to explain this?

Contrast my photosynth of a pictograph in Canyonlands National Park: http://photosynth.net/embed.aspx?cid=d1ad7d29-b92c-44e3-ae72-893d12125051 versus simple synth that tends to prove the concept really well: http://photosynth.net/embed.aspx?cid=740a069e-c9f0-41a9-a043-0b93fc06d0a3 Your efforts on photosynth probably reach more towards proof of concept, I'd imagine, and therefore minimalism really does make sense. I was surprised to learn that you'd shot these shots at Skaftafell prior to PS's creation. Serves me right for only scanning the description...

michaeldenis (Over 1 year ago)
I see what you mean: Many photos confuse where few photos illuminate. What I'm noticing in my own work is the advantage of drilling into a photo by approaching an object and taking another photograph, and then repeating this approach five to ten times. Your point is well taken, though. What I would consider to be the best "statue synths" are those that follow a *single* circle of photos around an object (creating the donut orbis) and then, perhaps, come in through a single drilled path in order to get a lot of close-ups. My sense is that these 3D models are more difficult than the rock art or museum galleries to synth. Personally, I love shooting objects that have both possibilities in them: A long approach and a "end object" that looks good in close-up. I am just wrapping up a trip to Southeastern Utah and I've created a series of synths that should exemplify this type of approach. I'm writing from a hotel now, I'm afraid. Glad to catch your reply at last.

TonyErnst (Over 1 year ago)
These photos were all taken in 2004, well before Photosynth was around, I spent alot of time going through my archives finding photos that would synth. While the results arent always as synthy, each shot was individually composed. If I had been taking with creating a synth in mind I definitely would have taken more photos. Im still undecided what makes a better experience though. A few well composed shots (like this synth) or a many many shots trying to cover all the angles, but without each photos getting individual consideration (example: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=47bd42a1-f939-4bdb-b916-54c71a714fb5). What do you think?

michaeldenis (Over 1 year ago)
I can. That's what it's like, shown here by a great jump from an ultra-ultra wide shot to an up-close shot right ontop of the waterfall. I went here before I discovered Photosynth and that jump-step is top-notch, although I always wish you'd take about ten fold as many photos, Tony ;)

Does anyone on the Photosynth or ICE teams have RED cameras? I'd love to see the results of stills taken with them in low light. As beautiful as this is at a distance, the stitching is a bit rough around the edges in this case.

Was led to your synths by a comment made on another synth. I noticed in your bio that you are connected with Photosynth. Huge praise on this site! In my humble opinion this is one of the best sites on the internet. The planning for the whole creative, interactive and future evolution of Photosynth is "spot on". As long as this site remains (cross my fingers)and evolves, I hope to continue to use and enjoy it. And it's free! Please stay free! I remember in school, the art instructor telling us to "really" look at our subject. Get a feel for it from all angles and distances. Years ago, taking a photo, meant finding what you thought would be the best shot and then click. And you would hope for the best. Today, I have never taken so many shots of a single object. I am "really" looking at my subject, and I feel my photography has improved. But this site is not just about photography. I have wrote this before, but, thank you to all involved for this amazing site.

Tom, these were all taken from land. It's a rather large lake so there's plenty of shoreline to cover. There's never been a better time to visit Iceland than right now with the Kronur so devalued. It was REALLY expensive when I went back in 2004, especialy for gas.

tbenedict (Over 1 year ago)
Was all this done from shore? Or were you out on the water? This covers a lot of ground! I love the part about the picture being hung upside-down. Those are some remarkably strong reflections! (At least they didn't hang it sideways as an abstract.) I'm checking out your other Iceland synths. That's been high on my list of places to visit for years, but I've never made it out there.

TonyErnst (Over 1 year ago)
Fred, I took these photos in 2004 with my first digital SLR the Canon 300D (6MP). The lenses used were a Canon 17-40L for the wide shots, and a Canon 100-400L for the detail shots. You can find exposure info for some of the images in this synth by clicking the thumbnails on the Jökulsárlón page on my website: http://tonyernst.com/gallery.aspx?gallery=joot

And by the way, you need to start adding some favorites! I just looked and you've only favorited 2 synths :-)

TonyErnst (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks for the compliments Tom. I've been going through my archives and creating synths of anything I have more than 10 shots of. This means that none of the images were taken with photosynth in mind, and therefore each was composed separately. In my head creating photosynths and taking individual photos are two different tasks. With my newer synths I've made a conscious effort to document the place with a couple panos from every direction to create a "scaffold" and then take my time and compose individual images to provide the detail - and as a bonus these usually work well as highlights.

tbenedict (Over 1 year ago)
It's a real treat going through your synths. Most of the ones I've done have been "full coverage" style, with big panoramas covering all the angles, but not focusing on any one thing. Looking at yours, it's obvious you're composing each shot to be a still photo in and of itself. Moving through the synth is a lot more like looking through a photography book. Way more artistic. The last highlight, the one of the spray from the falls, is gorgeous.

The wide angles should match the cropped versions and hopefully the detail shots will also match the crops. It's worth a shot, I've been able to make it work in the past.
