One of the best mine / tunnel synths ever. Great technique, reconstructed the true shape of the tunnel and captured great details. Nice job!

A wonderul synth! It shows the real power of Photosynth. Generating a complete 3d model of a complex and irregular underground structure from a set of well taken pictures. Great work!

This is soooo amazing! Impressive how deep you went in.

Very very good. I've only been into spelunking for a few months now, with less than 5 caves under my belt, and this really gets me pumped up for more

Glad you came back to this Void23. Cant wait to see the final version

This was an attempt to "fix" a previous synth of the same lava tube by taking some more photos of area I thought was the weekest. Although it shows up as "100% Synthy", It looks like I didn't get enough overlap in a few places, so the point cloud is broken into several chunks. To get the entire tube to show up in overhead mode, I'll probably have to wait a few months until the snow melts, then go back and rephotograph the outside parts of the tube. I'll probably erase this synth in a few days, but the first one I did, highlighted and geotagged, is still up with the rest of my synths.

K (Over 1 year ago)
That is too cool! Switch to overhead view (hit T for the shortcut) and you can see the structure of the whole tube. I'm impressed! It's kind of hard to navigate though, would you mind adding some highlights? While you're at it a geocode would let people find this on the map.

The complete set of 613 photos is "100% synthy", (see my original "Lava Tube" synth) and you can navigate the entire set of photos, but the viewer appears only to be able to display a certain number of images or points at one time. I'm splitting the whole synth into smaller synths so I can see the overhead views for the whole cave, not just the one section that shows up on the large synth. I'll get back there one day to photograph more of the tubes in the area, but for now I'm about 2000 miles away!

Can you go back to get enough photos to link the pieces together?

Definitely hit P to turn off the images and use the highlights to navigate. Surreal!

pope_luke (Over 1 year ago)
Wow, this one was a lot of fun exploring. Seeing the entire trail before me as a point cloud was really exciting.

madeeds (Over 1 year ago)
Moving between highlights in the points only mode is pretty awesome. Too bad the synther wasn't able to put this all into one coordinate system.

charliewallace (Over 1 year ago)
I love this one! When you turn off the photos and view as a point cloud, the rock becomes transparent, so you can see other parts of the tube off in the distance. And when you reach a spinnable view, you can drag down to see the complex of tubes from above, laid out like a map! This has scientific and documentary value, besides being a kick to do...

Incredible. How long did it take you to explore this place?

Hey void23 -- if you add a "highlight" to the bottom of the dig, you can get Photosynth to do all the work of pulling people from the outside to the bottom. Should only take 1 minute!

K (Over 1 year ago)
i can't believe you connected the outside with the cave. well done!

madeeds, the tunnel's slope may not be accurate because photosynth does not have enough infomation. For example: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=c8063fc8-145b-4b42-936f-58ca7724b26d If you rotate the Courthouse so you are looking down at the staircase and the 2nd floor hallway from the top, you'll see they don't align with the outer walls of the building and the tunnel. I don't have the building's blueprint, but I am guessing in reality, the staircase and the hallway align perfectly with the building walls. The reason they don't in the Point Cloud is that the synther does not have enough information, same as with the tunnel here. So for example, if there is one photo that simultaneously captures a Courthouse exterior wall AND the interior staircase; or, for this synth, one photo that simultaneously captures the Adam Stephen House's roof AND the bottom of the tunnel, then the tunnel's slope may be more accurate.

madeeds (Over 1 year ago)
Fascinating story! I wonder why the synther thinks the tunnel slopes down steeper than it seems to in the pictures.
