I'll try to be brief. It is normal multi-row panoramic photo, you should be able to do this with "normal" equipment. 1) taking photos: You need a tripod. Panoramic head is better, but for these photos in not necessary. Take photos in multiple rows, keep about 20% overlap. The longer focal length the higher resolution. Start on about 50mm, once you have the experience, you can increase it. This pano is taken at 200mm; 6 rows, 45 columns. It is better to take portrait format (you get more sky). 2) Stitching. I use PtGui, but there are many other softwares doing the same work (Autopano, Hugin). There are plenty manuals for the programs. 3) stripes method. For these extreme large panoramas I use "stripe" method. I would take ages in Ptgui to create full pano in one go. I create several overlaping stripes (about 10 for this pano) and then I merge them together in Photoshop. If you have more question, feel free to ask me.
