mattu

You've found Matt Uyttendaele's panoramas and photosynths. Along with creating some of the software that runs this site, I really enjoy posting my personal results here. Microsoft ICE is one of the products that has come out of my lab at Microsoft Research. You can learn more about ICE and other projects by following the links on my home page: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/people/mattu/

Also make sure to keep up on ICE developments by subscribing to my blog: http://hdview.wordpress.com and my twitter feed at: http://www.twitter.com/@MicrosoftICE

is there a way for me to save this for use as my desktop background image? i noticed no long press or right click works, but after examining the licence it say we are free to use it with due credit, as i'm not interested in sharing this, i just think its a gorgeous image and would look fantastic in my new 4k monitor as the background. but again an amazing picture, have you considered this technique for astrophotography? i could imagine some fantastic scenes from the northern mountains of Washington where light pollution is at a minimum.

mattu (Over 1 year ago)
This is the first really large pano I ever created. I think when we first stitched it, it was a world record for largest stitch. A video describing how it was done is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5UUrxL_2t0 I just re-did it for Photosynth yesterday in under an hour of processing.

Nice - any information on how you managed to create such a large pano?

I used Microsoft ICE. Every 'panorama' on the Photosynth web site has been stitched via ICE. An announcement of this capability in Photosynth is here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/photosynth/archive/2010/03/18/buttery-smooth-gigapixel-panoramas.aspx

@Quickwrapz - for panos that you own you do the following: (1) login, (2) click "Edit this panorama" centered under the main window, (3) click the "Highlights" tab in the pane that opens to the right.

RandyMiller (Over 1 year ago)
How do you add the images on the right side of the screen. The Space Needle, Smith tower, etc.

mattu (Over 1 year ago)
Hello GigaView. ICE should handle vignetting pretty well. This was just stitched straight-up in ICE. I added a few more details in the description.

Hello! I was wondering if I might be able to get a high resolution copy of this image from you? I would be willing to pay if you like... jagcool "at" yah0o (dot) c0m

MagiView (Over 1 year ago)
Great, this idea of labeling a pano. I intend to do the same with sme of my panos of Brussels... I just read that you are the head og the ICE design team. Congratulations, it's a great, fast and easy-to-use software - I use it for most of my panos. However, it is not very repeatable, and it can't stitch "horizontal" panos shot with long telephotos (such as 25 photos on one row). Are you aware of these problems? Would you like me to document them for you? Also, would you like to have some "magic tricks" for removing the haze in panos like this one? Jacques (2011 "at" magiview "dot" com).

Thanks Thomas. Totally agree with you. These images work really well at ski areas. Still so much potential to do cool stuff here - e.g. overlay run names, tag yourself, overlay videos, ...

GigaView (Over 1 year ago)
Gorgeous GigaPixel, MattU! A great example of what ski resorts and other large recreation properties can and should do.

mattu (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks everyone. @Larry_R ICE took about 2 hours to stitch, Photoshop then takes 1/2 hour to load. @RELE this was 300mm @AngelesCrest the Gigapan shoots in columns. This was 1200 images shot in RAW (no HDR). I did tweak the white point and exposure for a lot of them before stitching because the camera was underexposing the snow, making a lot of the inputs grayish.

AngelesCrest (Over 1 year ago)
2 Hours shooting! Wow. Q: Does it shoot in rows or columns? It seems columns would be better for changing light conditions. Q: Was this HDR or single shot? Very nice, thanks!

You can create a link to a coordinate by using the 'Share' button, located underneath the panorama, e.g. http://bit.ly/9TJOjW Going forward, I would love to see a feature that allows others to create highlights on my panoramas.

thirdphotoreceptor (Over 1 year ago)
Hi Matt, great image as usual! It would be nice to be able to 'point' to particular co-ordinates in an image in comments. Is a feature like that on the cards at Photosynth?
