mattu

You've found Matt Uyttendaele's panoramas and photosynths. Along with creating some of the software that runs this site, I really enjoy posting my personal results here. Microsoft ICE is one of the products that has come out of my lab at Microsoft Research. You can learn more about ICE and other projects by following the links on my home page: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/people/mattu/

Also make sure to keep up on ICE developments by subscribing to my blog: http://hdview.wordpress.com and my twitter feed at: http://www.twitter.com/@MicrosoftICE

Thanks Matt. I am working on that on the side. They should show up slowly as I find them.

Great panorama! With this much detail I would love to see a tour of the major sites - the "highlights" feature is great for this.

mattu (Over 1 year ago)
Neat perspective out of the window. One hint if you want the rotation to keep the buildings upright, then in ICE you need to use the orientation view. Click on the little cube icon in the top of ICE and adjust the horizon in the world to align with the center line.

Jayson, you are correct. The photo is horizontally mirrored. I did this because I was too lazy to complete the entire insect.

The description says: "Image duplicated and flipped horizontally to make a 2.19 gigapixel image"

jaysonragasa.net (Over 1 year ago)
As I closely look onto the image. The half of the bug's body is just mirrored. why?

Curtis_Sleve (Over 1 year ago)
Thank you for the comments. David that is an ocellus (plural ocelli). Its another form of eye. titanmiller, I am planning more projects in the future. This image took about 20 hours of work from start to finish so to catalog even 100 species would require a great deal of time. With my wife and son at home and a full time job it will have to remain just a hobby for now... Depth of field is an obstacle at these magnifications. It may take 100 photos at different focal planes which will be combined into a single image by the focus stacking program.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.

RELE (Over 1 year ago)
Exposure was set for the fullest range then backed off 2/3 off a stop to boost saturation. That shutter setting is then used for the Promote with a 5 shot bracket. Set the rig in a site where the lens will be protected from flare, in this case, an up-right beam was used to block the sun. Shots were taken at 24 degree intervals horizontally and 30 degree intervals vertically. Using Adobe Lightroom, the color-space, exposure, and sharpness setting are fine-tuned and a series of 305 TIF files are exported. These 305 TIF files are then run through a few tests in Photomatrix Pro to obtain the best looking “Exposure Fusion” result, and those settings are then used to batch process all of the 305 images into 61 final TIF fields for use in Microsoft ICE. In MS ICE, the 61 images were processed via the: “File-> New Structured Panorama” pull-down, and run as a zig-zag, 360 pano with auto alignment.
