That's one regret I have: I never met Jack Horkheimer. That's awesome that you did, and that he signed your book that way! If you're interested in seeing an image off of Megaprime, here's one at full resolution: http://www.cfht.hawaii.edu/en/news/CFHT30/ It's the CFHT Legacy Survey Deep Field 1. There are apparently half a million galaxies present in that one field. For more on the science goals of the CFHT Legacy Survey, this is the project's web site: http://www.cfht.hawaii.edu/Science/CFHLS/ Keep looking up! Tom

P.S. My astronomy field guide book is personally signed by Horkheimer, the Star Hustler! And yes, the inscription reads, "Keep looking up!"

I love astronomy, and I love digital imaging. This is very cool. Tnx. And yes, I'm a BIG GEEK! (haha:) OK, I'm off to find images produced w/ this baby...

Schn828, YES, reducing the image size will allow you to synth more images:) See the help thread, "how can i upload 800 photos to photosynth" (http://getsatisfaction.com/livelabs/topics/how_can_i_upload_800_photos_to_photosynth). Here are some other interesting threads I found... "What's going on behind the scenes?" http://getsatisfaction.com/livelabs/topics/whats_going_on_behind_the_scenes "Maximum number of images" http://getsatisfaction.com/livelabs/topics/maximum_number_of_images "What image quality and resolution should I use?" http://getsatisfaction.com/livelabs/topics/what_image_quality_and_resolution_should_i_use "What's the best size/resolution for taking pictures for Photosynth?" http://getsatisfaction.com/livelabs/topics/whats_the_best_size_resolution_for_taking_pictures "What is the maximum resolution used for feature extraction?" http://getsatisfaction.com/livelabs/topics/what_is_the_maximum_resolution_used_for_feature_extraction O, & GREAT SYNTH!

Excellent synth. I like the new overhead view but the Direct3D viewer still rocks (I especially like how the Direct3D viewer keeps all of the points in the point cloud viewable as you rotate or move.) The point cloud is amazing on this synth.

Schn828 (Over 1 year ago)
Glad everyone enjoys this synth! Gobo82, I have over 500+ more pictures of this area, but 2000+ pics won't synth. I have a question, I take my pictures on the highest detail settings, if I were to take pictures at the medium setting, could I synth more pictures together because the file size would be smaller?

gobo82 (Over 1 year ago)
Wow buddy what a synth! Congrats! What do you mean by scaling back the pictures?

Hi - just found this after I d/l Photosynth & am exploring - really impressed with the quad-lift helicopter - as we know choppers of all types are basically unstable & want to crash, so your design & manipulation of controls must be ace! What does it all weigh (how much of that is battery?) & what is its endurance? - pic of yourself & reflected chopper in window is v.good. Congratulations - Merger

swami_worldtraveler (Over 1 year ago)
Fry3199, GREAT JOB! Love the way u think:) Interestin helicopter. Ur design/construction? Cam rig, too? Tnx for includin pix of the camera rig. Would love to hear details on how electronic shutter triggering is done I kno sum cam models allow computer control (for time-lapse, etc.), so perhaps there's a interface adapter. FYI, my academic backgroud is data acq n control / robotics. Didn't c vid monitor, so guessin u servo the cam angle blind. LOVE, LOVE the shot of u where copter can b seen in window reflection. Awesome:) Cyclin thru shots was interestin for me, but imagine it was even more so for u, since u live in that area. I c this is ur only posted synth, n from over a month ago. Any planned future shoots? Well, tnx again for makin the effort n sharin:)

SUPER! U were a foto snappin fool, weren't u!?:) I SPACEBAR/Shitf+SPACEBARed my way thru all 691 fotos! V interesin xperience. Especially cool to go into pure pcloud mode while rapidly pressin SPACEBAR. Did u have a practical end for this clearly significant effort? Or were u just intrigued? Not sure what the record foto count is, but this one's gotta b up there. Musta had an over the top computer sys to pump this out (64-bit OS, n LOTS of RAM?). Tnx for sharin the results of all ur hard effort.

Nice cloud point, plants seem to synth well. Also Fiddler is an interesting app, I need to play with it some more after I have had a good nights sleep!

swami_worldtraveler (Over 1 year ago)
Tnx, madeeds. I certainly appreciate ur input, especially as I'm staring up the learning curve... n luvin it!:) Just finished 'Palenque Ruins" #3. It's about as good as it's gonna get w/ what I have. Pretty satisfied for first big go-round. One long panorama did fail and get discarded, tho:( Perhaps it was rejected due to size (7442x2296, 4.3MB), aspect ratio (particularly long), or otherwise Did get a smaller stitched pan to synth in (out of Photoshop: 4987x2085, 3.6MB, wide aspect ratio, but not as wide). FYI, I found the Get Satisfaction forum, including the run cmd for the log file. interestin n v helpful, especially to kno if the process crashed or not, since i don't really kno what is "normal" as i am ignorant at this time. Tnx again. I'll keep hackin away:)...

madeeds (Over 1 year ago)
@swami: I'm on the product team, so I have a little more info than most about how Photosynth works ;-) We do want to encourage people to hack Photosynth. Fiddler is a great tool for seeing what our apps send back and forth to the server. Also, check out the Photosynther directory under %TMP%. This is where the log files from the synther go. Stare at it a bit and I bet you'll quickly figure out what 95% of it means. As for automating the UI, I'm just using user32.dll to read our window form components and send messages. I hope this inspires you to do some hacking yourself!

swami_worldtraveler (Over 1 year ago)
Just saw ur reply from 4 days ago. Sorry for the delay. Still coming up to speed on the Synth community forum, etc. I really appreciate ur insight and experience. Clumps, I get it now:) Where can I find more info about clumps, log files, programming for Photosynth, etc.? Is it scripted? Sounds like there is a lot of power under the hood. R ur programs available for download, trial, or purchase? Perhaps there's a community of Photosynth hackers. So, the files get uploaded to the Photosynth server. Your utility can locate them. If I upload sum pix and want to make other synths (perhaps adding or removing sum pix), how do I specify which ones to use? Don't want/need to upload pix that r already on the server, of course. Tnx again for ur help. This is very exciting. I eat this stuff up:)

I don't think it's as simple as the background issue. Photosynth needs matching feature points in order to connect things. Instead of "doing it at night", what if you added a white sky to everything and tried to "bind" shots looking up (from the legs of the dragon/knight). That way the background would realistically be white?

Pierrot21 (Over 1 year ago)
Hi! I didn't understand 3 vs 2 pictures (I know 'to bind' but usually you bind only 2 pictures) In this other synth the big difference is that there is no (same) background: white background for the object and white sky. Then he made a good job by puting the top of the roof into the white background. I don't think it's possible to calculate a background in such a textured street as mine. But you give me the idea to introduce the knight into a dark street at night ...

Marvin (Over 1 year ago)
A good example of this is: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=ebf3e9ad-c0f5-43a0-b3da-fc3c689b62cc Where he managed to get the pointcloud of the object into the scene.

Marvin (Over 1 year ago)
Hi Pierrot. I used the word "bind" because that's what you used in a previous comment. Basically, if you look at the pointcloud, you'll find that while each of the knight and dragon have their own (very nice) pointcloud. However, you never see their pointclouds combined. If you want both the dragon and the knight in the same pointcloud, you'll need more than one picture of them in the combined scene (at least 3)

Pierrot21 (Over 1 year ago)
Thanks for your advice I can understand #1 and maybe I'll do it; but I don't understand #2 bindind 3 pictures, do you mean a zoom effect?

Just noticed sumthin interestin. Original pic orientation doesn't matter for the synth, but does in Grid View. I've noticed that Photosynth does not respect the meta data for image orientation, so I have been rotating mine in Windows Explorer. Will continue to do so, since Grid View has its place, too. Well, anyhow, just thought I'd point this out, in case others were unaware, as I was till just a moment ago. OK, synth on:)...

the halos/doughnuts/toroids come up nicely - great point cloud

Hastarin (Over 1 year ago)
I'm currently synthing a version with only 61 photos that were the wider angle shots. Thankfully since it decided only 2 of the photos were new it was relatively quick to do. Now I know it can reuse photos without uploading them I may experiment more. You can see the simpler version here: http://tinyurl.com/ahwrj3 That said you should be able to play with the point cloud on this. There are several toroidal rings to manipulate at various points, mainly at the corners, and you can always use a combination of the mouse and w/a/s/d to view it. Though I admit it's not as simple as the one main ring on the simpler version.
