300,000 Pengiuns, South Georgia Island

Description

This was my first synth of the King Penguin colony on the Salisbury Plain of South Georgia Island. There are well over 300,000 penguins in this synth (The weird pattern on the hillside is all penguins - be sure to zoom in close).

it's hard to tell the scale but it looks like they climbed quite a ways up that hill! i can't imagine that penguins are good climbers.

Wow. There are thousands of them! I didn't realize the gray on the hill was penguins.

They are incredible climbers actually. They have stiff tails that prevent them from sliding backwards, and huge claws on their feet. They're pretty good at jumping too.

The brown skua was relatively easy to find. For that matter, it looks like another birds' head behind it. What is amazing is how the penguins are aligned. Seems the brown ones are the "babies" and they are located within the group in lines. Also, it would appear that, with that many penguins, that some would be down, possibly dead. I could only see what appears to be one down at the far right end of the series. There is also only 1 penguin standing near it. Great photos. JFE

For some of the shots there was a second skua behind the first. It was a mated pair on a nest.

The brown ones are indeed young chicks. After reaching a certain size (big enough that the skuas can't kill them) they form creches while both parents are out finding food. Laying flat on the ground looking "dead" is a behavior the chicks use to conserve energy and stay warm. They're out of the wind, and increase the surface area they have exposed to the sun.
