Nice synth, it would be interesting to see how this would look as a panorama, if you put the pictures through Microsoft ICE (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ICE/) and uploaded it to photosynth. It looks like you kept the camera quite stationary while taking all the pictures, so it might stitch with relatively few artifacts.

thanks for your comments Douglas. i'm still not sure of how best to shoot these, because as you can see if you look closely, there are a lot of rough blends with many of the images. i shot this with a Sigma 10-20mm lens, at 20mm with a pretty high ISO.
