Description
The Monastery of Batalha was ordered built by King João I, as a way of thanking the divine help in winning the battle of Aljubarrota, against the army of the Kingdom of Castile. Construction started in 1386 and lasted until the early 16th century.
The so called Unfinished Chapels were added to the original plans of the monastery, from 1434 onwards, in order to be used as the resting place of king Dom Duarte and his wife. The dome was never built.
