Description

Asmat is probably the most well-known tribe in Papua (formerly called Irian Jaya). Live in the southwestern coast of Irian Jaya, which is the western half of Papua New Guinea (formerly Dutch New Guinea) and has been part of Indonesia since 1962. The Asmat people are protected to the north by mountains and to the south by the Arafura Sea; their land has long remained free of outsiders.

Theiy produce an outstanding wood carving, there are a few of them are classified as primitive, and worships the spirits of their ancestors. Form of ancestor worship is often visualized through sculpture, and art sculpture. Asmat people think death is a form of ancestral enemies who hate crimes, which uses witchcraft to death of people leluhurnya.Tujuan of Asmat carvings are to meet basic human needs, so look in more detail that their ultimate goal is the continuation of life and happiness together.
