Description
Kelso Dunes is a protected wilderness area and closed to vehicles. Located 7 miles south from Kelso Depot on the Kelbaker Road and 3 miles west on a new gravel road built in 2011. There are a couple of informational displays about the dunes along the road, one has a pit toilet. A one mile hike will take you to the top of the dunes about 600-700 feet and cover a 45 square-mile area. When the weather is right, the moving sand can create a booming sound also called singing dunes. There are no trails and you can get disoriented, note the location of distant mountains to take you back to the road and your car.
