I have the impression that currently this is not the case. I think that would be an improvement, as not al views in a scenery are that attractive. Starting view frame can be set already in the edit mode.

I've wondered the same thing. It seems unpredictable.

For example, in a Spin synth where it does not consist of a full orbit (the loop does not close) the default seems to make the starting photo the center of the arc - and this applies to the thumbnail on the profile page as well, I believe.

Usually on a partial Spin, I would prefer to make the first photo taken the beginning point, so I edit that manually and it seems that on some of the video thumbnails, it updates to reflect the new starting photo and in others it does not.

At a recent concert, I shot some partial spins of the stage. Some began from stage left and some from stage right, but of course the defaut starting view was center for them all, as far as I can recall.
Here are the links to the thumbnails: (thumbnail now starts from right) (thumbnail still starts from center)

Related: I've also wondered whether the full video preview gets updated.

Most of my synths are panos. Now that it has my attention, I do notice thumbnails to update. It is not an instant thing for sure. I feel that whatever the synth type, it should be possible to set the starting frame and thumbnails should reflect this consistently.

When you change the starting image we queue a task to regenerate the thumbnail, its animation, and the mp4. This often takes minutes to run, and there's a cache that has to time out, so it often takes 20+ minutes before you or anyone else sees the new animation or new movie.

@Photosynth Team, it's been about five and a half days since I updated the starting shot on those I list above which still show the thumb starting from the center, so some further investigation on your end may be in order.
