I was thinking that for geotagged synths, it would be cool to have a little 3D globe in the corner of the page which auto rotated and zoomed to show the different locations as I scrolled through a list/feed of different synths (be it on the site homepage, a search results page, an 'Explore' style page, or even a profile page).
I was imagining that the globe is a particular radius and when zooming in on a synth's GPS coordinates, the control is simply cropped in a circle with a diameter equal to (or just barely larger than) the diameter of the globe when zoomed all the way out.
I know that satellite/aerial imagery often clashes with a given color scheme, but perhaps you (the Photosynth team) could define your own map tile color scheme and styling in the same way that Facebook does when they use Bing Maps. (Similar to how MapBox does with OpenStreetMap).
Great idea, I am in support.
