Topic: Highlights Feature Improvements

The highlights feature is a really useful tool, and undoubtedly will take photosynth to another level, certainly in my area of interest (heritage). I've added a few highlights and captions to the following synth and it improves the experience immeasurably:

Rather than just flying to highlighted images, would it be possible to have the associated frame emphasised with a different coloured border (or some form of indicator) within the synth when you're near one. Not everyone will fly to these frames, but they may still be interested in the caption info should they choose to navigate / walk round the synth. Certainly in the case of the above model, you can navigate over the surface and it would be good to come across a highlighted frame (by accident) and refer back to the caption....

We're excited about the new highlights feature because we know how useful it will make some synths... your highlights are a perfect example of that.

As for surfacing the highlights and captions while exploring the synth is a good idea and something I think the folks working on that feature have thought about. I'll pass your suggestions on.

Looking forward to more of your highlighted synths.

Thought 1: My first reaction the first time that I made my first 'highlight' was a mixed one - I was pleased that we finally had some form of control and outlet for individual commentary and a narrative flow, but I was also disappointed that the highlight simply takes one to the photo selected, rather than the current part of the photo that the camera is centered and zoomed on. I do agree that the way that it is currently set up is probably a good default, but there should be a more advanced bookmarking feature allowing us to direct people's attention to individual details of specific photos. This has been possible from the beginning via the 'Share' link generator and I always assumed that highlights would be able to be just as robust.

Thought 2: It would be very useful to get keyboard shortcuts for advancing/regressing through the highlight list. Call me crazy/lazy but it just seems necessary.

Thought 3: Would it be tacky to use the color extraction technology that Windows 7 uses to glow the dominant color of an icon and the slideshows at use to color the quad highlights (as in the white rectangle that initially outlines a photo)? I'd really like to see this tested out.

I can imagine it not providing enough contrast if the photo is really dark, but perhaps some upper and lower limit of luminance could come into play. It also might come off as too colorful and playful, but I'm sure that we will have colorful and playful synths that could make use of such a feature. Again, I'd like to see it as a hidden option, or at the very least I'd like to see a video of the team testing it out and rejecting it out loud on camera to with an opportunity to collect feedback from the community and see whether we agree or not.

I suppose that third idea is not necessarily tied to Highlights as I think it has potential to apply to whole synths, but if it must be used in moderation, it might be a beautiful and fitting way to notate a photo which has a Highlight attached.

Overhead view just makes me wish even more for the utilisation of that colour extraction algorithm applying to the frusta of the cameras.

Back on topic: overhead view provides an absolutely great way to find the highlights in amongst the rest of the synth. It might still be good to have a way to notate that while down 'in' the synth, though.
