Topic: Sorting search results for my username by 'Best Synth' results in...

This isn't a bug exactly but when I run a search for my username I usually come up with mostly just my synths... which is useful, after all. Where the talking point comes in is that when I sort by 'Best Synth' I get... puzzling results.

I'm assuming that description, tags, geotag, and highlights carry a lot of weight as far as pushing a synth up the rankings, and I'm thinking that having a megasynth with more than the recommended 300 photos could even sink a synth down in the rankings.

What I'm really curious to know is just how exactly this sorting works. What are all the categories and what order or weight are they processed with (what is the category hierarchy)? Some of my bigger recent synths barely make the tail end of the search results for my own username.

While I would agree that metadata and highlights make a much better experience for the common user, I would very much appreciate a way to filter by percent synthy and total number of images or, alternately, by largest point cloud.

Hi, Nathanael. The "Best Synth" ranking is based on factors like the ones you said. The number of photos, synthiness, and some other factors come in to play when ranking the synths. We'll update the details of this ranking as we collect more data about what we think people like best.

Adding filters and sort orders like you suggest is something that we gave some thought to. We believe that most poeople would rather have a smaller number of controls that usually do the right thing instead of having a large number of complicated controls that let them really taylor the results.

I agree with simpler being better.

Personally I wouldn't mind it if being able to sort by the category of my own choice was not supported in any way beyond editing the URL in the address bar. Make a one time blog or forum thread where your more fanatical users can find all the interesting power-user tricks they could ever want and I'd be satisfied.

To view the most recent 500 synths in descending order we use this URL:

Logic dictates that ascending order should then be found by entering:
but it turns out that that is not a valid URL at all.

Again, I'm not asking you to clutter the interface for everyone. A few strings to pull what I want out of the database in the form of a few more parameters would be quite sufficient or, if they already exist, an unobtrusive post somewhere that details how to use them.

On the Search results you can choose your sort order, but Photosynth doesn't have a reverse sorted Explore results. It would be cool to have more "power-user tricks".
