Discussion about the now-retired Photosynth Apps for Windows Phone and iOS.
Hi, I compared Photosynth for WP7 and iPhone and I noticed several differences.
1. The WP7 application crashes a lot while iPhone app never does.
2. The stitching algorithm on WP7 is not as good as the one at iPhone app. I tested both apps side by side.
3. There is a bug at the WP7 application when you finish taking photos and the stitching is done it simply doesn’t save the stitched panorama as the iPhone app does. You have to stitch all of the photos again to see the panorama.
The test phones were Samsung Omnia 7 with all of the updates installed (7.10.8107.79) and iPhone 3GS with iOS 5.0 installed.
It seems to work fine with the Nokia Lumia 900 but I found it crashing often with the Titan II, especially when building larger panoramas.
It may be a memory management issue that just needs a little fine tuning.
I don't know but has the new version of Photosynth improved stitching compared to the first version?
I did a new panorama today and it looks like it doesn’t have any problems stitching photos. Except that it crashed once again after the stitching process was finished.
Peter, when you compared Photosynth's iPhone and Windows Phone apps, did you use a tripod to try to get as close as possible to the same exact input shots for both apps?
As with any phone, for apps like Photosynth's which need a lot of RAM for stitching, closing other open apps will help you avoid the app crashing.
