Adam Stephen House and dig

House built by Martinsburg, WV founder, Revolutionary War General Adam Stephen.
The house is supposed to have been built over a natural cave entrance, (since filled in) possibly as an escape route in case of Indian attack.
This most recent effort by the Tri-State Grotto of the National Speleological Society to locate the cave follows a rock ledge which forms the ceiling of the tunnel, towards an area of the yard that a micro-gravity survey indicates may contain open space.

Brilliant! Great job at linking the exterior of the synth all the down into the tunnel. What is the purpose of the tunnel? Fascinating, I'd some more information.

This is truly wonderful. I echo Tony's request for a little more info on the diggings...

What a tremendously fun synth to navigate through - thanks for taking the time to capture the imagery.

PS. I’m stuck in the tunnel, if I’m not out by morning can someone rescue me....pppplease :)

Hi Void23, very interesting shapes! What resolution(s) did you use for the photos?

PGRic: The tunnel is similar to the SB Courthouse in that to get out you may need to "backtrack" -- i.e. face the deeper end (down) of the tunnel with your back facing the "exit", and find the "3D" backward arrow to back your way out. :)

Fascinating story! I wonder why the synther thinks the tunnel slopes down steeper than it seems to in the pictures.
EdLee Over 1 year ago
madeeds, the tunnel's slope may not be accurate because photosynth does not have enough infomation. For example:

If you rotate the Courthouse so you are looking down at the staircase and the 2nd floor hallway from the top, you'll see they don't align with the outer walls of the building and the tunnel. I don't have the building's blueprint, but I am guessing in reality, the staircase and the hallway align perfectly with the building walls. The reason they don't in the Point Cloud is that the synther does not have enough information, same as with the tunnel here.

So for example, if there is one photo that simultaneously captures a Courthouse exterior wall AND the interior staircase; or, for this synth, one photo that simultaneously captures the Adam Stephen House's roof AND the bottom of the tunnel, then the tunnel's slope may be more accurate.

Hey void23 -- if you add a "highlight" to the bottom of the dig, you can get Photosynth to do all the work of pulling people from the outside to the bottom. Should only take 1 minute!
